REFLECTION PAPER
SOCIAL CONSCIOUSNESS — Philippines has been one of the countries I look up to with high respect and hopes
for a change. I have loved all of its quality and wonders from which I spent most of my time in writing about my country,
joined public speaking contests for it, competing, promoting it on social media platforms, and so much more. As I’ve read
Mr. Felipe De Leon Jr.’s paper, it has given me bountiful realizations that I have not learned from my parents, past teachers,
friends, and in the society I live in. How come I’m not socially aware of issues in subservience, misaligning education,
alienation from the community, its people, and its identity? Why are these concerns been kept locked away for the Filipino
Youth to freely access? Would it be because of lack of competency in most aspects? If so, why are there less discussions and
emphasis on the improvement for the competence of every Filipino citizen? It triggers me so much that I experienced
cognitive dissonances. Why and how are we not conscious of these matters in a social context?

DETERIORATION OF SOCIAL AWARENESS AND EMPATHY — It is clearly emphasized in De Leon’s paper

that the one thing that keeps us away from being socially conscious is lack of awareness and empathy. We’ve been
colonized by foreign races in the past and it is indicated in most of our history books in all levels of education. It has
eradicated our preset or pre-determined identity and have replaced whatever it is that they have imposed upon us.
Eventually, we became subservient or inferior. It has degraded the people in all aspects that made us less of a person and as
a society we are. This thins the bond that glues our individuality, originality, accumulated knowledge and wisdom,
creativity, and more. Thus, it is crucial to retain the cultural memory for the preservation of our collective will and vision
of life so that we become socially aware.

In this realization, the Filipinos had adapted to this concept. We’ve been thinking small of ourselves. This is what
we’ve been programmed in the past that still affects the current communal situation. We become so lost and we fight on
shallow issues. Our youth and the students have become incompetent because we are also blinded with our educational
system. Indicated in the paper is that our curriculum always had an American imprint whose framework is industrial in
design. We’ve been taught things that would eventually lead us to being slaves to corporations, factories, or employed to
other countries. As we age, we tend to lose our cultural identity as Filipinos. Our true nature have been deformed that’s
why we are so slow in terms of education, technology, competency, and more. This results to us not becoming fully aware
of everything because we have been fed with wrong food, nutrients, and supplements. We also become less empathic to
one another and this hinders our social improvement. What should we do now as all of these issues have become forefronts
of our problems?

INTEGRATION OF RELATIVE AND CULTURAL ARTS TO INDUCE SOCIETAL PARTICIPATORY

CONSCIOUSNESS — Of all the concerns I’ve mentioned, the most crucial answer I’ve understood is the integration and
appreciation of relative and cultural arts. Our problems at a national level are already a given. We could do so much more
but we tend to don’t care at all. However, if we just utilize and maximize the potentials of Filipinos in various fields, not
by merely focusing on one field because this also promotes insecurity and ignorance (an expert knows nothing else), we
would become greater. Filipinos are very creative, innovative, and high profiles. We tend to do great in most things we do.
In relative and cultural arts, we would be reminded of who we really are, what has been our vision in life as individuals and
a nation, what quality traits that we possess through time, and more. We would become socially aware through arts
because it comes in so many forms — visual, spatial, auditory, sensory, etc. — that would ignite our inner Filipino spirits.
If we just originally create art forms that depicts relativity in all aspects (spiritual, societal, relationships with family and
friends) and induces a call-to-action response (in social, cultural, and technological advancements), we would become
Filipinos with a transformed mindset that aims to become proactive participants. A mindset that uplifts each other towards
a national vision. A mindset that encompasses our quality and essential traits and leaves everything that have hindered our
progress and development. A mind that defines the Filipinos through the Arts.
