Engineeeing DRAWING PDF

The document provides information on engineering drawing types including different types of lines used, sectioning and dimensioning. It discusses the first and third angle projections and how arrows are drawn at the end of dimension lines. Finally, it outlines the role of engineering drawings for chemical engineers, noting they are used to create drawings for prototyping, production and construction, with examples like process flow diagrams, piping diagrams, and water flow diagrams.

Question # 01
Explain different types of lines.
Continuous thick line:
It is used as boundary line of drawing sheet and title
block lines at bottom of drawing sheet For showing end of threaded portion
and visible out lines of object, so that form of object at once clear. It is
known as object line.

Hidden line:
It is used where outline is not visible at viewing surface. It is
represented by thick short dashes evenly spaced. It is broken line, composed
of short strokes of equal lengths and spaced at equal distances must be
used

Center line:
It is used to locate center of circles, arcs and axis of cylindrical objects.
It indicates axis of symmetry like cylindrical, conical, spherical, circles, arcs
and should be extended slightly beyond views in which they are applied. It is
drawn thin and is represented by long and short dashes evenly spaced. Pitch
circle lines are shown by this type of line.
Short break line:

It is drawn thin and straight with evenly spaced free hand

for showing short breaks. It is curved line. These are used to show limits of
partial or interrupted views and sections.
Long break line:

It is drawn thin and straight with evenly spaced free hand

zigzags, is used for shortening of long parts, which are same throughout or
for showing long breaks.
Thin continuous line:
It is used to show projection lines, dimension lines,
extension lines etc. These are drawn thin.
Chain line:
It is drawn with long dashes and dots visible removed portions of
objects and with long dashes and double dots in between to show hidden
removed portions.

Cutting plane line:

It is drawn thin and is similar to axis line but thick at ends
and change of direction. It indicates plane of direction.

Given line:
It is drawn with medium thickness to show given lines and angles

a) Construction lines:
These lines are drawn for constructing drawings.
These are continuous thin lines.

b) Extension line:
Extension lines are projected from outlines at right
angles to boundary lines to be dimensioned.

c) Dimension line:
It is drawn thin and at distance of 6 to 8 mm away from
boundary line and parallel to it.
d) Leader line:
It is inclined line followed by horizontal line .Numerals or
notes are written on horizontal portion of leader line.

Hatching lines:
These lines are also called section lines. These lines are
continuous thin lines drawn at angle of 45 degree to main outlines of
sectioned portion. They are uniformly spaced and drawn 2 to 3 mm
apart.
QUESTION # 02
What do you know about sectioning and dimensioning in engineering drawing?
Sectioning:

Section view is view used on drawing to show area or hidden part of

object by cutting away or removing some of that object. Cut line is called cutting
plane and can be done in several ways.
Following are types of sectioning:
a) Full section.
b) Offset section.
c) Half section.
d) Broken out section.
e) Revolved section.
f) Removed section.
Dimensioning:
It is numerical value expressed in appropriate units of measurement
and used to define size, location, orientation, form or other geometric
characteristics of part .Method of communication to machinists in production
facility. Following are types of dimensioning with explanation:
Linear dimensions:
Linear dimensions can be horizontal, vertical or aligned

Radial dimensions:
Radial dimensions measure radius or diameter of arcs and circle
with optional centerline or center mark.

Angular dimensions:
Angular dimensions measure angle between two selected
objects or three points.

Baseline and Continued dimensions:

Continued dimensions, also called chain
dimensions, are multiple dimensions placed end-to-end.

Ordinate dimensions:
Ordinate dimensions measure perpendicular distances from
origin point called datum, such as hole in part. These dimensions prevent
escalating errors by maintaining accurate offsets of features from datum
Arc length dimensions:
Arc length dimensions measure distance along arc or
polyline arc segment.

Question # 03
What is difference between 1st and 3rd angle of projection?

quadrant. Quadrant.

The plane of projection is assumed to The plane of projection assumed to

position top view comes below front position top view comes above front
side view. Right side view comes to the view right side view drawn to the
left side of elevation. right.
Question # 04
How arrow is drawn at end of dimension line?

First dimension line should be approximately 12 mm (0.6 in) from object. Extension
lines begin 1.5 mm from object and extend 3 mm from last dimension line. Leader
is thin line used to connect dimension with particular area. Leader may be used to
when there is limited space, heavy black dot may be substituted for arrows, again
clarity is rule – it should be clear line into which dimension line ends.

Question # 05
What is role of engineering drawing in life of chemical
engineer?
Role of engineering drawing in life of chemical engineer:

Chemical engineers may

work in team along other designers to create drawing necessary for prototyping
and production, or in case of buildings, for construction with help of engineering
drawing .However, with advent of CAD and solid modeling software, design
engineers may create drawing themselves or perhaps with help of many corporate
service providers.
Industrial applications:

a) Chemical process flow diagram (PFD).

b) Piping and instrumentation diagrams (PID)
C) Water flow diagrams.
