Home Work - 3: EEE 207 / ECE 207: Electronic Devices and Circuits II

1. This homework assignment involves analyzing and designing various types of filters, including instrumentation amplifiers, low pass filters, high pass filters, band pass filters, and band stop filters. Circuit diagrams and transfer functions must be derived. Cutoff frequencies and gains must be designed to meet specific parameters. Bode plots must be drawn to show the frequency responses. 2. The second part of the homework involves analyzing a second order filter circuit, deriving its transfer function, designing the cutoff frequency, and drawing its Bode plot over the specified frequency range. 3. The final part repeats the process for a second order band stop filter, requiring the derivation of the transfer function, design of cutoff frequencies to meet parameters,

Home Work – 3

Summer 2020 Due: 12 Sep, 2020

1. What are the advantages of an instrumentation amplifier (IA) over a difference amplifier? Draw
circuit diagram of an IA. Design the IA so that the gain vo/vid, where vid = v2 – v1, can be varied
from 1 to 1000 V/V. Use a 100-k pot as variable resistor in the design.

2. Draw the ideal and practical frequency response curves of (i) low pass, (ii) high pass,
(iii) band pass and (iv) band stop filters showing cut-off frequency, pass-band and stop-
band of the filters.

3. Draw the circuit diagrams of a first order active low pass filter. Derive the expression of
1
transfer function T(s) and prove that its cut-off frequency can be given by 𝑓𝑐 = ,
2𝜋𝑅𝐶
where the symbols have their usual meanings.

4. Draw the circuit diagrams of a first order band pass filter and indicate its lower and
upper cut off frequencies on the diagram. Design the filter circuit so that it has a lower
cutoff frequency fL = 1 kHz, an upper cutoff frequency fH = 100 kHz and a midband gain
AM = 100. Draw the Bode plot of the frequency response of the filter circuit and indicate
the cutoff frequencies and the midband gain on the plot.

5. Draw the circuit diagrams of a first order band stop filter and indicate its lower and upper
cut off frequencies on the diagram. Design the filter circuit so that it has a lower cutoff
frequency fL = 10 kHz, an upper cutoff frequency fH = 1000 kHz and a midband gain AM
= 100. Draw the Bode plot of the frequency response of the filter circuit and indicate the
cutoff frequencies and the midband gain on the plot.

6. Consider the following filter circuit.

i. Identify (order and type) the filter circuit.

ii. Derive the expression of the transfer function T(s) and show that it can be
expressed as
1 1 1 1
where 𝜔0 = and 𝑄= (𝐶 + 𝐶 )
√𝑅1 𝑅2 𝐶1 𝐶2 𝑅1 1 2

iii. Design the filter circuit so that it has a cutoff frequency fc = 10 kHz. Choose
resistor values not less than 10kΩ.

iv. Draw the Bode plot with proper labeling for the frequency range from 10 -3fc to
10+2fc.

7. i. Draw the circuit diagram of a 2nd order band pass filter.

ii. Write the expression for its overall transfer function.

iii. Design the filter circuit so that it has a lower cutoff frequency fL = 1 kHz, an upper
cutoff frequency fH = 100 kHz and a midband gain AM = 100.

iv. Draw the Bode plot of the frequency response of the filter circuit for the frequency
range from 10-2 fL to 10+2 fH and indicate the cutoff frequencies and the midband
gain on the plot.

8. Repeat the above problem for a band stop filter.
