This document discusses friction, screw jacks, self-locking screws, and related concepts. It defines key terms like friction, angle of repose, coefficient of friction, and differentiates between pitch and lead. It also discusses self-locking and overhauling screws. The document contains several problems involving calculations for screw jacks, power required to move loads, work done, and efficiency. It asks the reader to derive expressions for effort required to raise and lower loads using screw jacks while accounting for friction.

UNIT – III FRICTION, SCREW JACK, SELF LOCKING AND OVERHAULING SCREWS
PART –A
1. Define friction? What are the types of friction?
2. Why friction is called as ‘necessary evil’? 3. Define angle of repose? 4. Define angle of friction? 5. Define coefficient of friction and limiting angle of friction? 6. State the laws of dry friction? 7. Classify the different types of friction? 8. Write down the expression of efficiency of self locking of screws? 9. State any four applications of friction? 10. State the laws of fluid friction? 11. Differentiate pitch and lead? 12. What is self locking and overhauling of screws? 13. Why self locking screws have lesser efficiency? 14. Define self locking in screws? 15. State the condition for self locking of screws? PART – B 1. An electric motor driven power screw moves a nut in a horizontal plane against a force of 75 KN at a speed of 300 mm/min. The screw has a single square thread of 6 mm pitch on a major diameter of 40 mm. The coefficient of friction at the screw threads is 0.1. Estimate power of the motor. 2. Find the load what can be lifted by applying a force of 220N at the end of 500mm long lever of screw jack using single start square threads. The load does not rotate with the spindle and is carried on a swivel head having a bearing of 100mm diameter. The pitch of the threads is 10mm and the root diameter is 50mm. Coefficient of friction between nut and thread is 0.18 and between spindle and swivel head is 0.15. Find also the efficiency of the jack. 3. The mean diameter of the screw jack having pitch of 10 mm is 50 mm. A load of 20 kN is lifted through a distance of 170 mm. Find the work done in lifting the load and efficiency of the screw jack when
1. The load rotates with the screw, and
2. The load rests on the loose head which does not rotate with the screw. The external and internal diameter of the bearing surface of the loose head is 60 mm and 10 m respectively. The coefficient of friction for the screw as well as the bearing surface may be taken as 0.08. 4. The mean diameter of a square threaded screw jack is 50 mm. The pitch of the thread is 10 mm. The coefficient of friction is 0.15. What force must be applied at the end of a 0.7m long lever, which is perpendicular to the longitudinal axis of the screw to raise a load of 20 KN and to lower it? 5. A turnbuckle, with right and left hand single start threads, is used to couple two wagons. Its thread pitch is 12 mm and mean diameter 40 mm. The coefficient of friction between the nut and screw is 0.16. 1. Determine the work done in drawing the wagons together a distance of 240 mm, against a steady load of 2500 N. 2. If the load increases from 2500 N to 6000 N over the distance of 240 mm, What is the work to be done? 6. A load of 12KN is to be raised by means of a hand wheel with a threaded boss to act as a nut. The vertical screw is of single start square threads of 40mm mean diameter and 10mm pitch. The mean diameter of the bearing surfaces of the boss is 80mm. the tangential force applied by each hand to the wheel is 120N. If the coefficient of friction for the screw is 0.14 and for the bearing surface, it is 0.16. Determine the suitable diameter of the hand wheel. Also, calculate the mechanical efficiency. 7. Derive from first principles an expression for the 1) effort required to raise a load with a screw jack 2) effort required to lower a load with a screw jack taking friction into consideration. 8. For a screw jack having the nut fixed, derive the equation (with usual notations),
