Why I Want to be a Teacher

Growing up you are taught to “think outside of the box”, to come up with unique

solutions to problem solve. However, it seems like as you get older you are more and more

encouraged to fit back into that box and mold into the status quo, our creative spark long gone.

We become accustomed to the idea that there is one way to learn, and suddenly we are stuck

back in that very box that we used to be told to think outside of. However, with billions of people

in the world it is impossible to believe that there is one right way to learn.

An incredible example of this is children with learning differences. I was never raised to

believe that differences such as autism and down syndrome, to name a few, were disabilities,

they were simply differences. Just because their learning style is different does not mean it is

incorrect or a hindrance. In fact, they probably have a wealth of knowledge that people who

learn in a more common way could never understand. I myself have learning differences

including ADHD and Dyslexia so I can appreciate the use of multiple learning tools to build

engagement and understand the lesson presented.

For me the passion for teaching in a classroom was inspired by teaching ballet to students

with learning differences more so than a specific teacher I had throughout school. Having taught

ballet to children with learning differences I was able to better understand the multitude of ways

in which they learn. While I may have originally intended to pursue ballet for many more years I

am eager to take what I have learned about commitment and discipline, as well as the various
ways of learning, and transition that into teaching. There is a whole wide world outside of the

box that I want my students to explore where they can be creative and find the learning styles

that work best for them.

As a teacher is it so important to accommodate the multitude of learning needs that flood

into your classroom on the first day of school. What may be the key to success for one student

could prove to be the downfall of another. It is my goal that when I am working with my future

students they feel valued and heard no matter their learning style. I know that I will not always

have the right answer and there is so much to learn but ultimately it is my job to ensure that their

creative spark never diminishes and their learning styles are valued. There is a reason that we

were once told to think outside of the box, we cannot allow ourselves or our students to get

sucked back into that box. Outside of the box is where the real learning happens, that is where

you not only learn about who you are but also about the billions of ways other people learn. If

you look closely you might even learn a few new things that can help you too.
