General requirements
The design, materials, fabrication, examination, inspection, testing, certification (ASME stamp) of tanks
shall be in accordance with ASME/ ANSI RTP-1. Alternate design proposal can be considered and is
subject to Employers approval. The design pressure and coincident maximum temperature shall be used
in tank design, considering all operating phases and including liquid head. Tanks subjected to vacuum
shall either be designed for full vacuum or suitable vacuum relief devices shall be considered.
Component Design
Heads and Shells
Minimum thickness shall be 6mm including the corrosion liner (if applicable). Corrosion liner thickness
shall be 2.5mm minimum and shall not be included in structural calculations for heads and shells. Top
heads of vertical tanks shall be designed to support a 100 kg person walking anywhere on the head, in
addition to any external pressure.
Maximum deflection of the top heads of vertical tanks under all combinations of loading shall be 0.55 of
span at any location.
If a tank shall be agitated by a vertical, top- entering agitator, the agitator shall not be supported from
the tank head. If a tank shall be agitated, the tank shell shall be reinforced with external circumferential
stiffening ribs.
Dished ends or tank flat bottoms shall be reinforced in the knuckle region.
Nozzles and Reinforcements
Minimum nozzle size shall be 50mm.
Threaded connections, bulkhead fittings, or pad-type nozzles shall not be permitted.
The reinforcement for nozzles and other tank openings shall be external to the tank wall and the area of
opening of reinforcement shall be increased if necessary, to limit sheer stress to 1.379 MPa. All nozzles
with internal projections shall have the ends capped or wrapped with the same number of surfacing
veils present in the corrosion liner of the shell and heads.
All flanges shall be flat -faced and molded integrally with the nozzle stub. Flange drilling, dimensions and
thickness shall be as per ASME B 16.5.
Manholes
All tanks greater than 900mm inside diameter shall have one manway minimum. Tanks greater than 5m
inside diameter shall have two manways minimum – one in the shell and one in the roof. Manways shall
be minimum 500mm diameter, flush with tank inside wall and provided with studs, bolts, gasket and
cover. All manways shall be provided with two handles for lifting.
Gaskets & Bolting
All gaskets shall be minimum 3mm thick, full- faced elastomeric type.
Bolts shall be provided in sizes less than and including 25.4mm diameter. Studs shall be supplied for bolt
sizes greater than 25.4mm diameter.
Supports
Flat-bottom tanks shall be installed with fully supporting foundations and shall be anchored.
Horizontal tanks shall be provided with minimum two saddle type supports.
Dished vertical tanks shall have skirt supports. Leg supports are subject to Employers approval.
Internals
Unless otherwise specified, all internals shall be manufactured with the same materials as the
equipment wall.
Support ledges for packing supports or other heavy internals shall be integrally molded in the wall or
shall utilize a plate clamped between body flanges. Secondary bonded rings may be used to support
lighter loads such as trays. All internals shall be covered with a full corrosion liner on the outside and all
edges shall be capped with surfacing veil.
Ladders, platforms and handrails for non-metallic tanks shall be external and supported independently.
