STATEMENT OF INTEREST

Mining Engineering

"A man is just like a mine rich in gems of inestimable value.

Education can, alone, cause it to, reveal its treasures,

And enable mankind to benefit there from."

I want to study Mining Engineering because of its increasingly significant role in our society, particularly
across a variety of industries from mining to environmental technology. It is an extremely versatile
subject which provides a unique opportunity to be involved in the development and manufacture of a
wide range of products, an aspect that I look forward to learning about. And I am in pursuits of such
education which can let me explore the wealth of knowledge. I am really fortunate because mining
engineering is the domain where my purpose and passion mingle. It is my earnest contention that an
undergraduate education in engineering helps one to comprehend the fundamental principles of science
in such a way that one is able to successfully apply these principles to real life situations and obtain
optimal solutions. This knowledge, when coupled with dedicated graduate study in ones specialized field
of interest would be the ideal preparation for a career in applied research and industry. It is for this
reason that I wish to pursue graduate studies. As a native of Ghana I am very much aware of the
potential mineral and chemical wealth of my country. Our environmental mining resources are of
massive proportions, but we suffer at present from a shortage of truly acquired skilled and trained
technical staff to develop the extraction industry. I am a student with strong academic background in oil
and gas engineering and I am very eager to further my knowledge and expertise through from a top-
ranking university, with a view of returning to my homeland to help to realize its potential for great
wealth and all that this could bring to my fellow citizens. It’s clear to everybody that the functioning of
the modern world depends on the availability of mineral resources, and will continue to do so until a
new technology emerges. As known global reserves of minerals reach their peak production capacities
there will be few more important jobs in the world in the immediate future than that of the mining
engineer. My ambition is to complete a degree and then work for a major exploration firm. I know that
this is a field which deals with the most complex technical and engineering challenges in the industry,
and would involve working in the most extreme condition on earth – the artic, the desert and in the
deep oceans, it is a challenging prospect, but a very rewarding one offering the chance to work with
come brilliant thinkers and to use technology beyond.

I believe my strengths lie in mathematics. I have been taking extra math classes that have improved my
organization and problem-solving skills. Trigonometry is the area that I enjoy especially because of the
challenge of solving problems that incorporate identities, algebraic methods, and trigonometric
properties. Right from my childhood I have recognized myself have a great entice towards the field of
mathematics and general science. During my higher secondary education, I showed in mathematics and
science and in order to supplement the education that I received in school, I became habitual eager of
science magazines and books. As a direct consequence of this I came to know of the latest development
in the science and engineering. Also, the study of physic and chemistry throughout my undergraduate
studies has enabled me to develop my interest further, for my physics coursework I researched the area
of the fluid flow, which I immensely enjoyed. I am aware that fluid flow plays an important part in
mining and this was an area which was touched upon during my three months placement at a local
engineering company and I was involved in a number of project led the head engineer.

Outside engineering I have a passion for football, competing at home in the regional championship
matches as goal keeper. I like the unique position of goalie as it feels good to be such a lynchpin for the
whole team. Although a match can involve being out of play much of the time, I maintain a high level of
fitness. I belong to my local Athletics Club and my special event is the 400 meters hurdles. I have taken
part in several charity events to raise enough to start building a new athletics track.

I have stayed in Ukraine for five years and I have witnessed first-hand the extreme difference between
the traditional, rural way of life, with few mechanized or engineered tools, with the expansion and
development of the city and the mining companies itself. Eastern Europe is still in a phase of active
growth, despite the global recession and my desire to study in the Canada is also motivated by my
interest in other European cultures. Experiencing university life and living in Canada for two years will
expand my horizons and enable me to play an even greater contribution when I return to my homeland
country and then work for a major exploration firm.

University of British Columbia could be an ideal platform to realize my aspirations. In my opinion, the
University with its commendable research facilities and renowned faculty will provide me with a suitable
environment to pursue graduate studies in mining engineering. By providing me with ample opportunity
for acquisition of knowledge and a concurrent process of self-discovery, I am sure the graduate program
will groom me to conducting independent research and serve as a launch pad for a research career
either in the industry or the academia. I am reliable, trustworthy, hardworking and sociable. My
analytical skills are strong and I have much initiative as well as enjoying working in a team. I am fully
aware of the high level commitment and perseverance required for postgraduate studies, and I believe
my aptitude, dedication and motivation will see me through the challenge. I look forward to a favorable
decision regarding an admission. Thank you immensely for considering my application.
