Questions
1. What are the water quality standard of safe and potable drinking water supply? (4 mark)

2. Discuss on type and purpose of preliminary water treatment process? (4mark)

3. A city water supply is proposed to draw water from channel having total discharge of
15,600 m3/day which runs for 10hrs with a depth of 2.2m and 30% of the channel flow
should be allowed to the downstream users. The distance b/n intake and treatment plant is
1.1km. Design and sketch the channel intake structure by assuming the following data. (8
mark).

 Minimum water level 0.4m below normal water level and the screen should be
0.15m above the channel bed.
 20% of the total area of the screen is covered by solid bars
 Velocity of screen & bell mouth is 15cm/sec & 30 cm/sec respectively
 the allowable velocity of intake conduit is (0.3-3 m/s)
 roughness coefficient of cast iron is 130

4. Design a pre-sedimentation tank for a water works which supplies 1.6 MLD to the town.
The sedimentation period is 4 hrs. The velocity of flow is 0.15 m/min and the total depth
of water in the tank is 4.0 m. assume an allowance for sludge as 80 cm. (4mark)
