Experiment 2: Tripping Characteristics of Fuse & MCB

This document describes an experiment on the tripping characteristics of fuses and miniature circuit breakers (MCBs). The experiment involves: 1. Constructing a test circuit in ETAP software using the specified component parameters. 2. Performing load flow and short circuit analyses to determine fault currents. A three-phase fault on bus 2 results in a short circuit current of 16.3kA. 3. Explaining the tripping sequences of protective devices for three-phase faults at different locations - a fault on the motor trips CB3; a fault on bus 3 trips CB2; and a fault on the transformer trips the fuse.

Experiment 2

Tripping Characteristics of Fuse & MCB.

I. Objective.

 To study the time current characteristics of Fuse and MCB for given network.
 Practice to use ETAB software for analyses power system.

II. Definition.

Circuit breaker (CB) is an automatically switch off the electrical circuit during
abnormal condition of the network in overload condition as well as faulty condition.
CB is much more sensitive to overcurrent that fuse. The switch operating knob of CB
comes at its off position during tripping, the faulty zone of the electrical circuit can
easily be identified. But in case of fuse, fuse wire should be checked by opening fuse
grip or cutout from fuse base for confirming the blow of fuse wire. The quick restoration
of supply cannot be possible in case of fuse as because fuses have to be rewire able or
replaced for restoring the supply. But in the case of CB, quick restoration is possible by
just switching on operation mode.

IV. Procedure.
1. Construct the circuit as shown in circuit diagram in “Edit mode”.
According to the value on the table above, we get this Topology:

For protection system such as: circuit breaker, over current relay and fuse must
compared with component’s rating.

V. Conclusion
This experiment provides us a lot of benefit about how to protect in power system, works
and Characteristics such as Over Current Relay (OCT), Main Circuit Breaker (MCB), Circuit
Breaker (CB) and Fuse. They have different usages yet they protect the system when fault
occur. Moreover, we can understand same technique of using ETAP software about setting
component for design power system to reach an appreciation value. This experiment is very
significant for students to understand next experiment.
