(ii) Devangkumar Medhat (105180735)

Q1. (2 Marks) Can an understanding of the multidimensional nature of quality lead

to improved product design or better service?

 Quality is an attribute which sets standards to the product with regards to its
material, cost and application as per customers requirement. So, it can be said
that Quality is a multidimensional nature which tends to improve product design or
serviceability.

 Customers are one of the important aspects which makes decision in the
competitive world. Quality norms are decided based on performance reliability;
durability of product serviceability and the aesthetics of the product.

Q2. (2 Marks) What would motivate a business to compete for the Malcolm Baldrige
National Quality Award?

 In 1987, US Congress introduced an honorable award of awareness in the Quality

Management System, and which is a symbol of performance excellence is known
as “Malcolm Baldrige National Quality Award “.

 There are many techniques to compete with the MBNQQ, by strategically

evaluating various management tools into monitored policies. Tools such as ISO,
Lean, Six Sigma, BCS, Total Quality Management, Cost of Quality, Kaizen etc.
can be used to improve efficiency of product and service within the organization
and encourage learning opportunities.

 The consistent practice of such tools will lead to increase profitability, greater
Customer satisfaction, improved productivity, lower company internal losses which
increase company efficiency.

Q3. (3 marks) How can lean and Six Sigma work together to eliminate waste?

 Lean manufacturing is about reduce loss of waste, whereas Six sigma is about
Quality. Lean considers waste as non-added value to product. In Six Sigma, Sigma
is a variance of output in process.

 Both are totally different aspects but somehow they manage to work together.
Because both, reduces the losses and increase financial benefits. Operational
excellence is one way to make work Lean and Six Sigma work together.
Collaborative work between people, work and purpose in terms of maximizing
profit and reducing potential loss with obtaining highest quality. These tools give
competition and differentiation between different organization.

 A planned Systematic approach is a way to engage people and data driven to get
make decision. Initially by implementing lean which will create a strong process
culture and work force engagement in simultaneous improvement. This will
enhance skills of the organization. Then Six sigma can be introduced to a skilled
people which are competent. Six sigma will increase the ability of organization to
do in-depth analysis, to get the quality required of the product.

Q4. (3 Marks) Is there a difference between quality for a manufactured product and
quality for a service? Give 2 specific examples.

 Service Quality is measured in terms of tasks at hand and delivers technical results
which satisfies the customers requirement. After a sale of product, there is service
provision between manufacturers and customer such services are often accessed
in terms of qualitative measures. Customers expect to provide reliable, satisfactory
and timely services and the provider should be polite, respectful and make the
customer understand the situation.

 However, the product quality is measured by the manufacturer itself and are
analyzed based on low-cost product in mass production. Different quantitative
tools are used to check the quality of product. Product quality is decided by the
customer business requirements and application, technical standards and formal
specifications.

 For example, Air conditioner purchased by a customer requests to refill the

refrigerant which has been leaked. A good service provider will also give warranty
period to refill such service, if the service is under the warranty period such service
will be free. But, if not, the manufacturer needs to send the representative who is
polite and respectful also technically sound to solve the problem. Before sale of air
condition, such problem is inspected in company by the quality control to check
the reliability of copper tube, this is the classic example of product quality in the
company itself. Sometimes copper weld joints in the tube leaks due to extreme
external weathers. To overcome such issues insulation can be used on joints so
that it will not overheat and cause damage.

 Another example, Amazon provides the good quality of service. There is 30 days
returnable warranty, if in case customer is unsatisfied, they can return the product
by performing procedure mentioned on site. If customer possesses prime
membership, there will be not shipping charge and product is delivered in within
48 hours.

 In automobile industry, each part needs to precise and accurately calibrated to fit
into to the assembly. In an engine, piston diameter is having +0.1 mm from its
tolerance then it would not get fit in the bore of cylinder, bore clearance is +0.05
mm. This is a typical example of product quality. Different calibration tools like
micrometer, Vernier etc. are used to measure dimensions.

Q5(2 Marks) Distinguish among quality planning, quality assurance, and quality
control and improvement.

Q6. (2 Marks) What are the three components of the ISO 9000:2005 standard?

 Three components of the iso 9000:2005 standard are 1) Quality Planning, 2)

Quality Control and, 3) quality Assurance.[2]
1. Quality planning: It is a part of quality management and its focus on setting the
quality objectives and decides the better process for the operation.[2]
2. Quality Control: the main focus of QC is to ensure the final products are defect-
free and try to improve the quality of the products.[2]
3. Quality Assurance: It focuses on making the best process, by which products are
developed and give confidence that the quality requirements will be fulfilled by
that process.[2]

Q7. (2 Marks) Reconsider the fast-food restaurant visit discussed in the slide. On
What would be the results for the family of four on each visit and annually if the
probability of good quality on each meal component was increased to 0.999?

 Total number of components = 10

 Probability of each meal component = 0.999 (it’s given)
 P{family of 4 member per month}= (0.999)^4= 0.9960
 P{all visited during year}= (0.9960)^12= 0.9531
Q8. (4 marks) Suppose you had the opportunity to improve quality in a hospital.
Which areas (name first two on your list) of the hospital would you look to as
opportunities for quality improvement?
