Overview
The weightlifting program at Superior Central Schools is an advanced course designed to teach
proper exercise form, safety procedures, and to improve student’s overall athleticism.
Specifically, this class will focus on improvements in muscular strength, muscular endurance,
and overall health. Students in grades 10-12 are eligible to participate after completing 9th grade
physical education/health. While the course is centered on the Bigger Faster Stronger program,
other aspects of athletic training will be incorporated into the curriculum.
Class format
A majority of the time spent in class throughout the week will be in the weight room, actively
participating. Students will also be completing additional workouts in the gym, and some
classwork in a regular classroom. Many assignments will be posted online in a Google
Classroom. While students will have the opportunity to complete many assignments
electronically, almost all material can be adapted to a traditional pencil/paper format upon
request.

of the following reasons:
-lack of participation/effort
-improper clothing
-safety failures [Loss of ALL POINTS for the day]
Record book checks: Students will be required to keep accurate record of their weekly workouts.
Periodically throughout the semester students will receive points for filling these out completely
and accurately.
Classroom assignments: A portion of this class will take place in the classroom learning about
human anatomy, muscular structure, proper nutrition, workout recovery, and other related topics.
Exams
The semester and final exams will be two parts. One portion of the exam will be a classroom test
taken during the exam period. Additionally, students will receive a grade (worth 100 points)
based upon their improvement. Students will be tested in three exercises: bench press, squat, and
deadlift. Their improvements in these three exercises will be averaged and graded on the
following scale:
Semester- A B C D E Final- A B C D E

Grading policy
This course will follow the grading scale and homework policy in the student handbook.
How to earn make up points for excused absences
There are two ways in which students can make up daily points from absences:
1. A written summary of an article related to strength training will earn 4 points. The
summary should be at least 1 paragraph (8 sentences) in length and either include a copy
of the article
2. Laps may be jogged around the basketball court in the main gym. Two laps will be worth
one point. Laps may be made up before or after class.
Make up points must be completed by Friday of the week following that in which they were
missed to get credit. Students may make up points in advance of an excused absence. It is the
responsibility of the student to earn required points.
No-Dress Policy
To begin each semester, each student will be allotted one “no-dress” day, allowing them 1 day to
be present in class but not participate. For each no-dress day taken thereafter, their SEMESTER
GRADE will drop by 1 letter grade.

better than you were the day before.”
