The Great Math Mystery: (Reaction Paper)

Mathematics is the universal language of science and is essential to understanding both nature and technology. The documentary explores how math is present throughout the natural world, from the patterns in flowers to the length of rivers, and how advancements in fields like physics, engineering, and music are built upon mathematical foundations and discoveries. Mathematicians believe that mathematical concepts have always existed and are simply discovered through rigorous processes and methods, unlike other scientists who may discover things without specific methods.

The Great Math Mystery

(Reaction Paper)
When we watched The Great Math Mystery, I thought it was all about problem
solving and while watching the documentation I felt bored. But I was wrong it was
interesting to watch and we will get more knowledge about mathematics and the
mystery about math. Mathematics is the universal language of science. The reason is
that the universe underpinned by the same order. The structure of mathematics is
essential to nature. According to physicist Max Tegmark, mathematics is our physical
reality. He perceives the real physical world and the essence of reality to be purely
mathematical. For me, it is not possible to have advancement in science and technology
without the aid of math, because mathematics is important in our in this advancement.
We can’t get advance knowledge in science and technology without any progress of
mathematics. Mathematics has a big role and enabled mankind to make extraordinary
technology advances. Mathematicians don’t believe that math can be invented, because
all of the things that come up with have existed since the beginning of time. They
believe that in their field properties of the universe are simply discovered and
understood such as the same with physics. Mathematics can even be seen all
throughout with nature, example is the number of petals in flowers. The relationship
between the petals of flowers and mathematics is Fibonacci sequence. Fibonacci
sequence is a series of numbers in which is number is the sum of two preceding
numbers. Geometry can be also seen in flowers with spiral patterns in the seeds of sun
flower head two set of spiral and when you count the spiral in each direction, both are
Fibonacci numbers. Math was essential to everything from the first wireless radio
transmissions to the prediction and discovery of Higgs Boson and the successful
landing of rovers on mars. In the documentary, mathematics can also be seen in the
length of rivers, as they are directly related to the value of Pi ( π). It is also said that Pi
tells us what color should appear in a rainbow and how middle -C sound on a piano.
Between math and music are also examined in the movie. Esperanza who
demonstrates on her upright bass the discovery by 6 th century Greek scholar
Phytagoras related to simple ratios of strings of varying lengths. This mathematical
relationship produced to her the most beautiful and harmonious musical tones. The late
Eugene Wigner, noble laureate in physics, spoke that mathematics is unreasonably
effective in describing the physics of the universe.

How does a mathematician differ from an engineer and other scientist? Scientist
discover things without specific methods however mathematicians discover things with
process and methods. Engineers apply the principles of science and mathematics to
develop economical solutions to technical problems.
