Lab Report

This document describes a laboratory experiment in RF and microwave circuit simulation using Advanced Design System (ADS). The objectives are to perform S-parameter analysis of transmission line circuits and learn the basics of S-parameter simulation in ADS. Problems 1-4 involve simulating and tuning various transmission line circuits including a 90 degree phase shift line, open and short circuited lines, a quarter wavelength transformer, and impedance matching networks. The simulations are performed between 50MHz to 3 times the given frequency of 3.8GHz and various plots of return loss, insertion loss, and Smith charts are produced to analyze the circuit performance at different frequencies.

RF and Microwave Circuits and Systems 069MSI620

RF and microwave Circuits and Systems.

Laboratory #1
Objectives:
To utilize Advanced Design System to perform S-Parameter analysis of numerous
transmission line circuits.
To learn the basics of S-Parameter simulation and display environments in ADS.

Frequency selection for Lab 1:

3.8 GHz.

For all of the simulations in Laboratory #1, using the following microstrip
substrate: Er=3.5
H=60 mils
T=0.7 mils

Problem #1
Problem 1-A
Create a 50 Ohm Transmission line having an electrical length of 90 degrees at 3.6
GHz frequency using Linecalc. Note the dimensions and submit with your
simulated data.
Utilizing the S parameter simulation template, simulate your transmission lines
Performance from 50 MHz to 3 times your frequency.
 Plot the Insertion loss in –1dB/div increments
 Plot the Return Loss in –2dB/div increments
 Plot the Smith Chart, S11 and S22
 Place markers in each of the plots

Input Reurn loss at given frequency

Input Return Loss = 20 log S11

Problem 1-B
Eliminate Port 2 and replace it with a short circuit. And simulate from 50 Mhz
to your frequency.
 Plot the Return Loss in –2dB/div increments
 Plot the Smith Chart, S11 only. Place a marker at your frequency
 Re simulate from 50 Mhz to 2 times your frequency. Place a
marker at the highest frequency and plot the S11 in smith chart
form. What is the impedance now? Why? Comment on your
plot.
 Re simulate from 50 Mhz to 3 times your frequency. Place a
marker at the highest frequency and plot the S11 in Smith chart
form. What is the impedance now? Why? Comment on your
plot.
At twice the given frequency ( from 50 MHz to 7.6 GHz)

At three times the given frequency (from 50 MHz to 11.4 GHz)

RF and Microwave Circuits and Systems 069MSI620

Problem 1-C

Repeat Problem 1-B with the end of your transmission line open instead of
shorted.

Problem #2

Create a quarter wavelength transformer at your frequency (3.8) matching a source

impedance of 50 Ohms to a load impedance of 100 Ohms.

 Simulate from 50 MHz to your frequency and plot both Smith Chart and
Return Loss at –2dB/div scales
 Simulate to 2 times your fundamental frequency and plot the same data
 Simulate to 3 times your fundamental frequency and plot the same data
 Using the tuning utility, adjust the impedance of your line and notice the
change in the return loss. Plot this family of curves.

Solution

Problem #3

This is a two-step problem. First use the MIMP shareware software to match the
following circuit at your frequency. Then verify your tuning circuit using ADS.
Demonstrate the performance of your tuning circuit at your frequency by plotting
the S11 in Smith Chart and Return Loss form. Try to come up with a more optimal
circuit that minimizes the return loss even more.

Here is the circuit you must match.

RF and Microwave Circuits and Systems 069MSI620

Given Frequency = 3.8

ZL=1/Y= 1/(jwc+1/R)
ZL= 1/(j0.0238761+0.033333)
ZL= (19.82 – 14.20j)
ZL= ZL/Zo
ZL= (0.3964 – 0.284 j)

Calculations made:
From the smith chart
C= 5.15pF
L= 2nH

Using the MIMP shareware software the values of the matching components were
found as shown below.

This was then verified in ADS as:

Problem #4

Perform the same as in Problem #3 for the following Circuit.

ZL=R+jXL
ZL= R+j2*3.14*f*L
ZL= 80+j23.87
ZL= ZL/Zo
ZL= 1.6+j0.4774

Calculations made:
From the smith chart
b = -0.35
So BL = j b Y0 => L = 7.57 nH
x = -0.82
So XC = - j (x) Z0 => C = 1.29 pF

Similarly here design in MIMP was:
