Assignment Module 3. Normal Distribution

The document discusses probabilities related to normal distributions for two scenarios: 1) Student travel times to school which has an average of 90 minutes and standard deviation of 8.5 minutes. It calculates probabilities for travel times above/below certain thresholds. 2) Money spent by domestic tourists visiting certain destinations, which has an average of $20,000 and standard deviation of $2,650. It similarly calculates probabilities for amounts spent above/below thresholds. All probabilities are calculated using the normal distribution and z-scores.

Assignment: Module 3.

Normal Distribution

A. The average travel time of a student from home to school is 90 minutes with standard
deviation of 8.5 minutes.

1. What is the probability that a student’s home-to-school travel time is over 100
minutes?

P (x > 100)
Z = (100 - 90) / 8.5 = 1.18
Area = .88100 = 1 - .88100 = 0.11900

2. What is the probability that a student’s home-to-school travel time is either

under 70 minutes or over 95 minutes?

P (70 > x > 95)

Zupper = (95 – 90) / 8.5 = 0.59
Zlower = (70 – 90) / 8.5 = -2.35
Aupper = .72240 = 1 - .72240 = 0.2776
Alower = .00939
Area = 0.2776 + .00939 = 0.28699

3. What is the probability that a student’s home-to-school travel time is less than 60
minutes?

P (x < 60)
Z = (60 – 90) / 8.5 = -3.53
Area = .00021

4. What is the probability that a student’s home-to-school travel time is between 65

minutes and 110 minutes?

P (65 < x < 110)

Zupper = (110 – 90) / 8.5 = 2.35
Zlower = (65 – 90) / 8.5 = -2.94
Areaupper = .99061
Arealower = .00164
Area = .99061 - .00164 = 0.98897

B. A domestic tourist from Luzon spends an average of P20,000 with standard deviation of
P2,650 every time she goes to certain tourist destinations in Visayas.
1. What is the probability that a domestic tourist spent between P15,000 and
P18,000?

P (15,000 < x < 18,000)

Zupper = (18,000 – 20,000) / 2,650 = -0.75
Zlower = (15,000 – 20,000) / 2,650 = -1.89
Areaupper = .22663
Arealower = .02938
Area = .22663 - .02938 = 0.19725

2. What is the probability that a domestic tourist spent over P27,000)?

P (x > 27,000)
Z = (27,000 – 20,000) / 2,650 = 2.64
Area = .99585 = 1 - .99585 = 0.00415

3. What is the probability that a domestic tourist spent P30,000 at the least?

P (x < 30,000)
Z = (30,000 – 20,000) / 2,650 = 3.77
Area = .99992

4. What is the probability that a domestic tourist spent either below P12,500 or
above P29,500?

P (12,500 > x > 29,500)

Zupper = (29,500 – 20,000) / 2,650 = 3.58
Zlower = (12,500 – 20,000) / 2,650 = -2.83
Areaupper = .99983 = 1 - .99983 = 0.00017
Arealower = .00233
Area = 0.00017 + .00233 = 0.0025
