Tutorial 4 Week 4

Course: CEB706 – Designed of Reinforced & Pre-Cast Concrete Structures

Tutorial: 04 – Module 4

NOTE:
Use the simplified rectangular stress block (AS3600) for all questions.
Following data should be use for all questions unless otherwise stated
 3
Specific weight of the reinforced concrete is 24 kN/m
  
N type bars (fsy = 500 MPa) for tension and compression reinforcement
 
R type bars (fsy = 250 MPa) for shear reinforcement

Q1:
A rectangular beam section has b = 500 mm, d = 600 mm, and f’c = 32 MPa. If the section is
subjected to a moment of 800 kNm, calculate the depth of the neutral axis?

Q2:
A rectangular beam section has b = 400 mm, d = 600 mm, and f’c = 32 MPa. When neutral axis
depth is at its limiting depth, Calculate the steel area (Ast) and design Moment capacity (M*) of
the section?
i. If M* is increased to 1000 kNm, what area of compression steel is required if dsc =
40 mm?
What is the additional area of tensile steel is required for the section?
ii. If M* is increased to 1000 kNm, what area of compression steel is required if dsc =
60 mm?
What is the additional area of tensile steel is required for the section?

Q3:
A rectangular beam has b = 300 mm, d = 450 mm, dsc = 60 mm, and f’c = 32 MPa. If the
beam is required to design for the M* = 400 kNm, calculate the required area of tension and
compression steel for the section.

Q4:
A rectangular beam section has b = 350 mm, d = 540 mm, and f’c = 40 MPa. The design
moment M* = 720 kNm. Due to redistribution of moments, the neutral axis is limited to 0.3d.
Determine the area of steel required for compression and tension. (Assume dsc = 50 mm).

Q5:
A rectangular beam section has b = 400 mm, d = 600 mm, and f’c = 32 MPa. When the
neutral axis depth is limited to 0.3d, Ast = 4024 mm2 and the design moment M* = 677 kNm.
If M* is increased to 800 kNm, Determine the area of steel required for compression and
tension reinforcement. (Assume dsc = 50 mm).

Q6:
A rectangular beam section has b = 300 mm, d = 600 mm, dsc = 30 mm, and f’c = 32 MPa.
The area of compression steel is 220 mm2 and tension steel is 3200 mm2. Determine the
design moment M* of the section.

Q7:
A rectangular beam section has b = 400 mm, d = 600 mm, dsc = 40 mm, and f’c = 32 MPa.
The area of compression steel is 400 mm2 and tension steel is 2500 mm2. Determine the
design moment M* of the section.

Q8:
A flanged beam has D = 600 mm, d = 540 mm, beff = 1000 mm, bw = 400 mm, t = 100 mm, and f’c
= 25 MPa.
i. If tension reinforcement Ast = 2400 mm2 is provided, calculate the neutral axis
depth and its moment capacity Mu.
ii. If tension reinforcement is doubled (Ast = 4800 mm2, calculate the neutral axis
depth and its moment capacity Mu.
