Problem Set - Review of Signals and Systems

1. Determine if the system is linear, time invariant and memoryless. The input-output relationship
of the system is given as
y[n] = x[n + 1] − x[n − 1]

2. Check if the discrete signal x[n] is periodic. Find the fundamental period and sketch the Fourier
series coefficients of x[n]. π  π

3. A continuous time signal x(t) is sampled using a sampler with sampling time of 0.004 second
per sample. The output of the sampler is x[n] = sin(2π(0.25)n).
(a) Identify four continuous time signals x(t) and that will give the same x[n] = sin(2π(0.25)n)
in the output of the sampler.
(b) How do you ensure that x(t) can be uniquely identified after sampling ?

4. Let x[n] be a real and odd periodic signal with period N=7. The Fourier series Coefficients of
x[n] is ak . Given that a15 = j, a16 = 2j and a17 = 3j.
(a) Determine the values of a0 , a−1 , a−2 and a−3 .
(b) Find x[n] from the spectrum.

5. Consider a LTI system whose input x[n] and output y[n] are related by the difference equation

(a) Determine y[n] , if x[n] = δ[n − 1]
(b) Comment on the memory, causality and stability of the system
(c) Find the step response of the system using convolution
(d) Find the response of the system for the input x[n] = cos 2π(0.2)n

6. A signal x(t) = cos ωo t is transformed into xd [n] and again reconstructed by an ideal low pass
filter with a cut off frequency of ωs /2.

(a) Show the sampling and reconstruction of the signal in frequency domain, when ωo = 6
(b) Explain aliasing effect and suggest a method to solve the ambiguity.
