Ema Emits College Philippines: Whole Numbers: Place Value

The document is a module on teaching place value to first grade students. It defines place value as the value of a digit based on its position in a number. A place value chart is provided to show that in the number 4,728, the 4 is in the thousands place and represents 4,000, the 7 is in the hundreds place and represents 700, etc. Students are then given practice exercises to test their understanding of place value, including identifying the place value and value of digits in numbers, writing numbers in words and symbols, and solving word problems involving place values.

1 Place Value
Telefax No. (043) 284-3974

Intended Learning Outcomes:

At the end of this Module, you should be able to:
 identify the place value, and value of a digit in the numeral;
 read and write numbers in symbols and in words; and
 solve word problems involving place value;

Let’s Discuss…

In kindergarten, kids are working on basic math, like learning to count, and simple
addition and subtraction using single numbers. First grade math is a huge step up in complexity,
as kids are learning to count larger numbers, learning to solve equations, and adding to their vital
math vocabulary.
As kids learn increasingly complex math concepts, the following strategies can help
students increase their number sense:
Teaching Place Value
One of the most important concepts to introduce to first graders is place value. Think of
place value as a gateway to easily understanding large numbers. Once kids are able to understand
a digit’s place or value in a number, they can learn the steps to adding and subtracting numbers
larger than 10.

1.1 Place Value

In math, every digit in a number has a place value.

Place value can be defined as the value represented by a digit in a number on the basis of
its position in the number.

Our numeration system is called Hindu-Arabic or Decimal System. Unlike other

numeration systems such as Roman Numeration, the Hindu-Arabic systems uses place value
which makes it easier to read numbers.
Take a look at the following place value chart.
PLACE VALUE CHART
THOUSANDS HUNDREDS TENS ONES
1000 100 10 1
In a four-digit number, the place value of each digit from left to right are: thousands,
hundreds, tens, and ones.
The place value chart below shows the number 4 728. How do you read this number?
PLACE VALUE CHART
Place Value in Words THOUSANDS HUNDREDS TENS ONES
Place Value in Figures 1000 100 10 1
Given Number 4 7 2 8

The number 4 728 is read as “four thousand, seven hundred twenty-eight”. The table
below shows the place value and value of each digit in the number 4 728. Observe that the value
is simply the product of the digit and its place value.
Place Value
Digit Word Figure Value
8 Ones 1 8x1=8
2 Tens 10 2 x 10 = 20
7 Hundreds 100 7 x 100 = 700
4 Thousands 1000 4 x 1000 = 4000

Here’s another example showing the relationship between the place or position and the
place value of the digits in a number.

In 13548, 1 is in ten thousands place and its place value is 10,000;

3 is in thousands place and its place value is 3,000;
5 is in hundreds place and its place value is 500;
4 is in tens place and its place value is 40; and
8 is in ones place and its place value is 8.

Understanding the place value of digits in numbers helps in writing numbers in
their expanded form. For instance, the expanded form of the number above, 13548 is 10,000 +
3,000 + 500 + 40 + 8.
