Detailed Lesson Plan: (Integrative Approach)

The detailed lesson plan is for a Grade 9 mathematics class taught by Mary Claire P. Valdeavilla on September 24, 2019. The lesson covers combined variations, including defining direct and inverse variations and writing the equations that describe these relationships. Examples are provided to illustrate how to write equations for statements describing variations and to solve problems involving combined variations. Group activities are included where students work together to solve variation problems and present their work. The lesson aims to help students understand and apply the concept of combined variations in mathematics and daily life.

IV. PROCEDURES
A. Reviewing previous (Integrative Approach)
lesson or Presenting the
new lesson (5 minutes) Solve the following:
Given that p varies jointly as q and square of r, when q=5, r=2 and p=60,
Find r when p=300 and q=4.

Note to the Observer: COT Indicator 2: Applies a range of teaching

strategies to develop critical and creative thinking, as well as other higher-
order thinking skills. Utilization of varied teaching strategies are done here as
well as to the next part of the lesson.
B. Establishing a purpose
for the lesson (1 minute) At the end of the lesson you shall be able to:

C. Presenting examples/ (Thinking Skills Strategy under Constructivist Approach)
instances of the lesson
(10 minutes) TRANSLATE ME!

Let the learners translate the following statements into mathematical

equations.
1. The steepness (S) of the beam varies jointly as the breadth (b) and
depth (d) and inversely as the square of its length (l).
2. The volume (V) of a gas varies directly as the absolute temperature
(t) and inversely as the pressure (p).
3. The safe load (L) for horizontal beam supported on both ends varies
jointly as the width (w) and the square of depth (d) and inversely as
the distance (s) between the two supports.
4. W varies jointly as C and the square of A and inversely as B.
5. P varies directly as the square of X and inversely as S.
6. The electric resistance (R) of a wire varies directly as its length (l)
and inversely as the square of its diameter (d).
7. The acceleration (A) of a moving object varies directly as the
distance (D) it travels and inversely as the square of the time (t) it
travels.
8. The pressure (P) of a gas varies directly as its temperature (t) and
inversely as its volume (v).

Note to the Observer: COT Indicator 3 : Manages classroom structure to

engage learners, individually or in groups, in meaningful exploration,
discovery and hands on activities within a range of physical learning
environments. Classroom management is being implemented to create an
organized classroom environment that is conducive to learning.
D. Discussing new (Constructivist Approach)
concepts and Practicing
new skills #1 (9 minutes) A combined variation involves a combination of direct and inverse
variations or joint and inverse variations.
The statements regarding a combined variation are:

“y varies directly as x and inversely as z”

“y is directly proportional to x and inversely as z” , is written symbols as

kx yz
y= or =k ,
z x
where k is the constant of variation.

Illustrative example

Given that z varies jointly as x and the square of y and inversely as w, and
z=98 when x=7 and y=3, and w=9. . Find the equation of the variation that
describes the relation and the value of z when x=5, y=4 and w=3.

Note to the Observer: COT Indicator 4: Manages learner behavior

constructively by applying positive and non-violent discipline to ensure
learning focused environments. Addressing learners’ behavior is important in
teaching learning experiences to create an environment that impose
classroom discipline.
E. Discussing new (Constructivist Approach)
concepts and Practicing
new skills #2 Illustrative example

Find the equation of the combined variation when y varies directly as x and
inversely as z. If y=4 when x=6 and z=3. Find y when x=20 and z=5

Note to the Observer: COT Indicator 5: Plans, managed and implements

developmentally sequenced teaching and learning processes to meet
curriculum requirements and varied teaching contexts.
F. Developing mastery (Peer Teaching Strategy under Collaborative Approach)
( Leads to Formative
Assessment 3) Group Activity
Directions: The class will be divided into 4 groups, each group will be given
a problem regarding the lesson which they will solve as a group and will
present their works in the class.

1. If Z varies jointly as the cube of x and inversely as the square of y,

find z when x=4 and y=2 provided that z=13.5 and x=6 and y=4.

2. Given that m varies jointly as n and the square of p and inversely as

q, if m=6 when n=3 and p=2, find q when m=12, n=4 and p=3.

3. Given that c varies directly as a and inversely as b when a=4,b=3 and

c=36,find b when a=12 and c=6.

4. Given that (x+2) varies directly as (y-1) and inversely and inversely
as (z+3), if x=4 when y=7 and z= 15, find x when y=5 and z=3.
