Arc Flash Exercise 13 – Solution

Purpose & Description

The purpose of this exercise is to learn how to model medium voltage controllable fuses (MVCF). This MVCF
device is directly connected to the primary side of a medium voltage substation transformer which could be
installed in commercial and industrial systems. The primary protection is a fused load break switch. In this
example, the current-limiting fuse is sized to protect the transformer, but an arc flash event at the low voltage
switchgear enclosure will result in destructive damage if no mitigation upgrade to the protection scheme is taken.

The upgrade for the system will be to place a controllable fuse along with a bypass switch which can be modeled
as an external relay interlocked to operate contactors in ETAP. This example will utilize ETAP base features such
as revisions, out-in service state, scenarios, and presentations to best execute and present the original and
mitigated design.

In this example, we will learn how to model relay controllable fuse in ETAP and its different mode of operations.

Arc Flash Exercise 13 – Solution

Setup
 Load the project file named “AF-Example13”. (The solution to this example is located in a directory
inside of this exercise called “Solution”. Open the solution project only to compare against your exercise
once completed.)
 Utilize the library from AF-Example13.lib (inside the current project directory).
 Select the following ETAP\Options (Preferences) before executing the exercise steps.

Procedure

Step1

Go to scenario wizard. Set up following scenarios. Fill in the incident energy results in table 1 for a fault on the
line side of the Main CB.

Table 1: Scenarios and Incident Energy Results for a Fault on the Line Side of the Main CB
Incident Energy for Arc
Scenario Name Revision Config Output Report
Fault at Main CB (cal/cm2)
E-RATED-FUSE E-RATED Normal E-RATED-FUSE 43.44
MVCF-NORMAL Normal Mode Normal MVCF-NORMAL 14.46
MAINTENANCE Maintenance Normal MAINT-MVCF 1.72

1.1 What was the fault clearing time for a fault at the line side of “Main CB” for scenario E-RATED-FUSE?

1.286 sec
___________________________________________________________________________________

1.2 What is the fault clearing time for a fault at the line side of “Main CB” after the MVCF is installed and it is
operating under normal operating conditions?

0.437 sec

Arc Flash Exercise 13 – Solution

1.3 How is the MVCF “Maintenance” mode being simulated in ETAP? What setting needs to be changed to
configure the near instantaneous operation of the primary side switch and fuse?

It is being implemented by changing instantaneous and overcurrent setting of the relay .OC1 and OC2 needs to be
modified in order to execute this mode of operation.

1.4 How is the MVCF total clearing time of the MVCF fuse being modeled in ETAP? What setting needs to be
changed to configure the maintenance mode operation of the primary side switch and fuse total clearing time?

Total clearing time of the MVCF fuse is being modeled inside a multi-function relay1.Relay1 on the secondary of
the transformer controls the primary side fuse with OC1 being modelled as instantaneous bypass SW and OC2
being modelled as controllable fuse.

Step2
Inspect the TCC “Star1” for each of the following revisions:

 E-RATED
 Normal Mode
 Maintenance

Observe the coordination, the time differences between devices and also identify the magnitude of the arc current.
These are all factors which need to be considered when applying this type of incident energy mitigation
technique.
