What Is Communication
Importance of Verbal
1) Keeping each other informed - we can use verbal
communication to share useful and important
information.
2) Asking for help and support - communicating verbally
about the problem is the first step to solving them.
3) Sharing emotions - we can share emotions as well as
factual information with our communication skills
4) Expressing ourselves creatively - Verbal
communication can be the means for expressing our
imagination.
Types Of Verbal
1) Speaking face - to - face - Words are combined with
our gestures, facial expressions and tone of voice to give
a full communication package.
2) Speaking on the phone - Communicating verbally on
the phone is an excellent way to reach people far away.
3) Giving a lecture - This is a key example of the utility of
verbal communication in an academic context.
4) Voice mail - We can record our verbal communication
for our friends, family and colleagues to pick up later.
Types of Non-Verbal
1)The face and it’s expressions - smiling,nodding, raising
eyebrows and so on have long been very important
ways of communicating. Without saying a word, we can
speak volumes with glance at our interlocutor.
2)Movement of Hands - The hands can express so many
different things, from prayers to commands - all without
the need for words.
3)Dancing - We can express so many different emotions
through dance. For passion to religious devotion,
dancing either alone, with another person as part of a
couple or in a Synchronized group, can communicate so
much.
4)Silence - Sometimes, staying silent can communicate
much more then words can. Silent can be happy, sad,
powerful or it can simply communicate to others that
we do not want to engage with them.
Advantage of written
i) It is more precise and explicit.
ii) Provide ready records and reference.
iii) Legal defence can depend upon written
communication as it provides valid records.
iv) It is a permanent means of communication, thus it is
useful where record maintenance is required
Disadvantage of written
i) Too much paper work and e-mail burden is involved.
ii) It is time consuming as the feedback is not
immediate. THe encoding and sending of message takes
time.
iii) Requires great skills and competencies in language
and vocabulary use.
iv) Poor writing skills and quality have a negative impact
on organization’s reputation.
