How are Airports generally designed?
Site Selection
- Site selection is essential in designing an airport. The site will have a big impact on designing the
airport. Because a balance must be achieved between he aeronautical and air-trasnport standard and
the mostly is the environmental impact of the airport.
The site must be:
-Relatively flat
-Sufficiently large to accommodate the runways and other facilities.
-Free from obstruction
-Sufficiently close to population centers for easy access of the users.
-Far away from urban centers
Airfield Layout and Configuration.
Operational requirements
Runway Orientation.
The location and orientation of runways is ruled in turn to avoid obstacles, particularly during landing
and takeoff procedures. Some large airports, obstacle in air navigation must be considered up to 15km
from the runways and runway configurations must also ensures that, 95 percent of the time, an aircraft
can approach the takeoff without crosswinds or tailwinds.
Runway Configuration.
1. Single Runway
-It is used as orientation to take advantage of the prevailing winds
2. Parallel Runway
3. Terminal Design
Pros and Cons-what do you think are the best practices in design for airports? what should you
avoid? what should you consider?
In designing an airport these are the things you should avoid:
-Noise
-Neglecting the security and boarding without being lax.
-Confusing signage.
Considerations
- Airport Master Plan
- Land Use Compatibility
- Terminal Site Planning
- Airport Security
- Environmental Protection
- Sustainability

A. Differentiate/ provide explanation and give examples of the following:
Single Level Road/ Single Level terminal
The single level terminal is the preferred design at the majority of small and non-hub
airports. The processing of passengers and baggage takes place at the same level as the apron,
and the entire layout is quite simple and economical.
Single Level Road/ Double Level terminal
