UNIVERSITY AT BUFFALO ADMISSIONS REQUIREMENTS

Please read these important instructions. Your cooperation is required if you expect efficiency in
the handling of your application which has been sent to us by AMCAS. You must comply with all
items requested before the processing of your application can commence.

I. Letters of Recommendation: All Applicants

1. Required is either a Pre-Health Committee Letter, OR three letters of recommendation with at


least one letter from a science professor. Letters from TA’s, Instructors, etc. should be
countersigned by the professor, if possible. (MD/PhD applicants are encouraged to forward a
letter of recommendation from a research mentor/advisor as well.)

2. Applicants with Graduate School Education


If a significant number of years have transpired since your undergraduate education, you have
the option of excluding undergraduate letters but must supply us with letters from three (3) of
your graduate school professors.

If you choose to continue using undergraduate recommendations and you:

a. are just beginning your Masters or Ph.D. program, no additional letters are required.

b. have completed at least one year of a Masters or Ph.D. program, one


(1) recommendation from a professor in your program is required.

c. have completed two (2) or more years. Two (2) letters from graduate professors
are required.

3. Substitution Letters

Applicants unable to secure the required letters of recommendation should advise this
Office immediately in writing. State the problem and set forth the credentials (name and title)
of the people who will submit letters for you.

II. MD/Ph.D. Applicants

To apply for the MD/PhD, interested students should follow the standard procedure for the AMCAS
application to the Medical School indicating their intent to apply to the Medical Degree/Ph.D. program.
Our Office will contact you when we receive your AMCAS report to verify your intent in applying to the
combined program. Evaluation of applications shall include consideration of the candidate’s statement of
career objectives, prior research experience, letters of support, (in addition to the medical school’s letters
of support, we required at least one letter of recommendation supporting your participation in research
activities.) After review, the Admissions Committee’s invitation for an interview or final decision will be
mailed to the applicants.
If you have filed your AMCAS application and have NOT indicated your intent to apply to the combined
program, please contact the Office of Research and Biomedical Education, 716-829-3398 or contact
Brittany Sandor at [email protected]. Deadline date for applying to the program is December 1st.
However, applicants are encouraged to notify the Office of Research and Biomedical Education of your
intent as soon as possible. Recommendation letter(s) supporting research experience should be mailed to
the following address:

III. Permanent residents (Non-Citizens) of the United States

Permanent Residents of the USA must submit a photocopy of their “Green Card” before any application
processing commences. An email copy to Mr. James J. Rosso would suffice. ([email protected])

IV. Address Changes

Please report all address changes directly to AMCAS and to us.

V. Transcripts

All applicants should have forwarded to AMCAS all the official transcripts that will be required to
process the application. AMCAS verifies the courses and grades before sending the application to us,
and this is the record that will be reviewed by the Committee.

VI. MCAT Exam

We only accept scores from an MCAT exam taken in the last three (3) years.

If an applicant is retaking the MCATs in September, the Committee will await receipt of these
scores before reviewing the application, unless you advise us differently.

VII. Committee Review

Upon receipt of all your credentials, you will be advised that your application is complete. We hope
to inform you within a reasonable length of time if we have not received all your credentials, but it is
essentially your responsibility to see that we receive them before our December 15 deadline.

When your application is reviewed by the Committee, you will be notified of their decision by email
as soon as possible.

If you are to be invited for an interview, we will notify you well in advance of your interview date.
