1. Convert given spectroscopic quantities between units of cm-1, μm, Hz, and nm. 2. Calculate the frequency, wave number, and energy change for a transition observed at a wavelength of 8 μm in both J/molecule and J/mole. 3. Calculate the vibrational frequency and wavelength corresponding to a thermal energy of kT at 298 K. 4. Calculate the frequency in Hz and wave number in cm-1 for mercury green light with a wavelength of 546.1 nm. 5. Sc (Physics) PH802 Atomic and Molecular Spectroscopy Tutorials-I

Date: 3-8-2020

1. Convert the following spectroscopic quantities as indicated : 20000 cm -1 to µm, 0.25nm to

-1 -1
Hz, 550nm to cm , 8.9 GHz to cm
2. The wavelength of the radiation absorbed during a particular spectroscopic transition is observed
to be 8 µm. Express this in frequency (Hz) and in wave number (cm -1), and calculate the energy
change during the transition in both joules per molecule and joules per mole.

3. What is the vibrational frequency corresponding to a thermal energy of kT at 298 K ? What is

the wavelength of this radiation?

4. The wavelength of mercury green light is 546.1 nm. Calculate (i) the frequency in Hz, and (ii)
wave number in cm-1.

5. Calculate ѵ, and energy E for ultraviolet radiation of wavelength 1000 Å. *End*
