Answer All Questions Only

Q1. Answer the following questions (Choose five only):
1. Explain in details the organic theory of petroleum origin.
2. The presence of iso-paraffines in gasoline is essential for increasing the octane number of gasoline
fuel. Identify this?
3. a) Sketch the principles of petroleum products with carbon numbers and boiling ranges.
b) Write the formula for Five of the following compounds
1) Pyrene
2) Naphthobenzothiophene
3) Cyclic ether
4) Quinoline
5) Indole
6) 1-ethyl-2-methylcyclopentane
4. Compare between Octane Number (gasoline fuel) and Cetane Number (gas oil fuel) related to:
 Chemical Composition.
 Function.
 Typical Values.
 Fuel and Types of Engines.
 Methods of Measuring.
 Additives.
5. What are the considerations that must adopted in emulsion treatment in crude oil?
6. Give the comparisons for TBP,ASTM and EFV distillation Curves related to:
 Feed.
 Methods of Measuring.
 Techniques or Apparatus.
 IBP and FBP 40 M
Q2.A) Mention All types of Insulation that can be used for Base, Walls and Roof of Furnaces.

B) It is required to heat 2000 bbl/day of 37 ºAPI crude oil in a fired heater from 220 ºF to 650 ºF using
refinery gas. NHV =1700 BTU/lb, as a fuel. In the radiant section, the heat rate is 45000 BTU/hr.ft2 of
projected area. The tubes are of (15" outside diameter, 40 ' long, and 10" spacing) and arranged in two
rows. Given: G=15 lb air/lg fuel, Cp oil =2.3 BTU/lb and the furnace efficiency is 75%. Calculate:
1. The mass flow rate of fuel required.
2. Number of tubes in radiation section, and
3. % heat absorbed in the convection section (state any assumption used). 30M

3. Calculate ºAPI of whole Crude Oil.
4. List cut points for second stage distillation process.
