Example Jotter & Lab Report Writing PDF

This document provides an example of how to write a report for a chemistry experiment determining the formula unit of a compound. It outlines the key sections including: [1] topic and objectives, [2] introduction, [3] method/procedure, [4] results/observations/calculations, [5] discussion of results and answers to questions, and [6] conclusion summarizing the formula determined. The example procedure uses zinc and hydrochloric acid to synthesize zinc chloride and weighs the crucible at each step to calculate the formula unit.

SESSION 2019/2020

i
CHEMISTRY UNIT OF KEDAH MATRICULATION COLLEGE
SESSION 2019/2020

Example how to write a report.

1. Topic:
Experiment 2: Determination of the formula unit of compound.

2. Objectives/ Aim:
i) To synthesise a of zinc chloride compound
ii) To determine the formula unit of zinc chloride

3. Introduction:

- Simplify or summarize from laboratory manual.

4. Method/ procedure (jotter):

Example how to wrute joter

Procedure:

2) + 0.25 g of Zn powder
i) mass of crucible + Zn =……….g
ii) mass of Zn = ……….g
crucible

Analytical balance
1) mass of crucible = …………..g

3) + 10 ml, 6.0 M HCl

* If not dissolve completely……
4) + 5 ml, 6.0 M HCl
* If not dissolve…………
stir 5) + 5 ml, 6.0 M HCl In fume cupboard

* the amount of acid to be used must not exceed 20 ml

6) Heat slowly in fume cupboard until completely dry.

Hot Plate * make sure compound does not melt*

7) Allow the crucible to cool to room temperature & weigh it.

Analytical balance

SESSION 2019/2020
8) Reheat the crucible, let it cool to room temperature & weigh again. Repeat
until the difference in mass is not more than 0.02 g.

***** procedure must be written using diagram********

5. Results/ Observation/ Calculation:

*** Usually result / observation are written using a table****

Result:
1) i. mass of crucible = …………….g
ii. mass of crucible + Zn powder = …………….g
iii. mass of Zn powder = …………….g
2) Mass of crucible + zinc chloride
1st heating = …………..g
2nd heating= …………..g

3) i. Mass of zinc chloride = ……………….g

ii. Mass of chlorine = ……………….g

*** Use an accurate reading for all the using apparatus***

Example: Reading of burette must be at two decimal places.

6. Discussion:

6.1 Discuss the result from the experiment

6.2 Questions and answers:

*Answer all the questions from laboratory manual.

6.3 State precaution:

1 …………………………………………………………………………
2 ……... …………………………………………………………………

7. Conclusion:

Example:

7.1 Zinc chloride can be synthesized by reacting …………………………………

7.2 The formula of zinc chloride is …………………………………………………..
