Community Live Workshop – MQTT Workshop

Pre-requisites

Install Ignition on your desktop / laptop by following the steps below:


Download Ignition from Inductive Automation website

Install Ignition, using all the defaults. Click Get Started and agree with the terms and
conditions.
Set your username and password. Click Next through the HTTP Configuration screen.
Click Start Gateway to Launch Ignition and login.
When you get to this screen you are ready for the Webinar

Click the link below to go to the Strategic Partner Modules download page for version
8.0.12. Scroll down to find the MQTT Transmission module and download this from the
Inductive Automation website and save the file to a known location on your computer.

During the Webinar

We will walk you through this section during the webinar, these steps are in case you
need to refer to the instructions at your own pace.
With the Ignition instance you have installed running, goto Config – Modules:

Scroll to the bottom of the page and select “Install or Upgrade Module….”
Choose File – and locate the downloaded module “MQTT-Transmission-signed.modl”
that you downloaded during the pre-requisite
Select “Install”
Scroll down and accept the License Agreement and the trusted certificate authority
(which ensures the software has not been manipulated by anyone after it was created by
Cirrus Link).
Scroll down the page and confirm the Cirrus Link Solutions module is installed and
“running”

On the left hand side select MQTT Transmission – Settings

Select the “Servers” tab:

Select “edit” for the Chariot SCADA entry:

Replace the default URL (“tcp://localhost:1883”) with this new URL:


ssl://ignition8.chariot.io:8883

Scroll to the bottom of the page and hit “Save Changes”


Note that your MQTT Transmission no shows “Connected 1of1”

Press “Get Designer” – and select “Press the “Download for xxxx” for whichever
operating system you are working on “Windows”, “OSX” etc
Following the installation steps, accepting all defaults
Hit “Finish” on “Launch the Designer Launcher”
The Designer Launcher should detect the Ignition instance running on your machine and
create Launch button for you. Select Launch.
Login with the username and password you previously set.
Select “+New Project”
Give your project a “Project Name” and “Project Title” leave all other settings default:

Hit “Create New Project”


This should create a screen like this:

If you don’t see the “Tag Browser” window you may need to scroll down
Expand the tag tree like this:

Note the “Example Tag” and “Edge Node xxxxxxx”, where xxxxxx is unique to your
installation, you will want to look out for this tag on the host system Arlen will
demonstrate.

Double click on the Example tag value “1” and enter a new value, when you press Enter a
pop will appear:

Press “Enable Read/Write Mode”, every time you enter a new value a message is
published to ALL MQTT Clients that have subscribed.

Congratulations you have just created an MQTT IIoT solution!

After the workshop you will need to uninstall these two applications if you don’t want to
continue experimenting.

In Windows type “Control Panel” in the Command window:

Select “Control Panel”


Select “Uninstall programs”

If the programs are sorted in date order the top two will be “Design Launcher” and
“Ignition”, select each in turn and press “Uninstall” to remove everything from your
system.
