Webinar : Understanding the opportunities for EXTC Graduates in a
5G enabled world.
PROJECTS-Learning while doing to approximate industry setting.
BY
Prof. K.Y.RAJPUT (Associate Professor) and
Prof. Manoj Kavedia(Assistant Professor)
Objective: To make the students understand the need and importance of Mini
Projects and Major Project in B.E. curriculum a means of learning while doing
to meet the industry requirements.
This presentation is broadly divided in two parts.

A) First part will cover following points:

1. Importance of Projects in B.E. Curriculum
2. Classification of projects based on various subjects/fields under EXTC.
3. Criteria to select the B.E. Project.
4. Importance of project based paper publication in standard journals and in conferences.

B) Second part will cover following points:

1. Classification of Mini project based on various subjects/fields under EXTC.
2. Selection of Mini projects so as to form base for B.E. Project.
3. Project ideas and examples.

First part will cover following points:

1. Importance of Projects in B.E. Curriculum.
 Since the beginning of the Engineering education Projects are integral
part of curriculum.
 Main objective of inclusion of Project work in B.E. curriculum is to
implement the knowledge earned while studying various undergraduate
subjects in a form of specific application.
 In this process of learning while doing the students expertise into a
particular area by promoting their creativity and develop a problem
solving skill so as to make them industry ready. Another advantage of
Projects in curriculum is the student learn how to work in a group which
is normally done in industry, develop their leadership skills. In the
process the students also learn ways and means to present their work and
this helps them make presentation (of projects that are assigned to them
in their job) using various tools in the industry.
 The students, who are able to get sponsored project from Industry also
get an first hand work experience in industry which eventually helps
them to get employment.

To summarise Project work in BE is a means:

1. To produce researcher who have clear thinking, articulation and interest to
carry out theoretical and/or applied research resulting in significant
advancement in the field of specialization. The research skill so developed can be
further enhanced to join Masters and Ph.D. degree.
2. To develop an ability to identify, formulate and solve electronics and
telecommunication engineering problems in the latest technology.
3. To develop the ability among students to synthesize data and technical concepts
from applications to product design. With the skill of product development a
student can become an entrepreneur after acquiring experience in the industry.

2. Classification of projects based on various subjects/fields under

EXTC.

Note:
1. All above are projects which are done by earlier batches and cited here just to give an
idea, so as to help the students to select project area subject background required and
project topic.
2. It is n ot necessary that any particular project fall under one category of project.
3. Project can be either Software based or Hardware based or Software plus hardware
based.

3. Criteria to select the B.E. Project.

After going through the importance of inclusion of project work in B.E. curriculum
and the classification of project topics based on project area and subjects associated
with, it is now very important to see the criteria to select project topic/title.
There is no specific criteria that can be adopted for making selection of project but we
can approximately use following criteria(s):
a) Interest in the particular project area, how much you understood ( and scored in)
the subjects associated.
b) Usefulness of project to society in general, Environment and safety, cost of
project, originality of project idea.
c) Importance of project as a final product and in industry as an application.
d) Whether the project is hardware, software or Hardware plus software project. For
instance if you are strong in programming but poor in hardware you can go for
software project. But in order to demonstrate your capabilities it is generally
recommended that you select project that is hardware plus software as well as
covers multiple project areas.
e) Most important if you are able to get a sponsored project which can meet one or
more criteria, it would be best for you as then better chances of getting absorbed
in same industry.
f) Formation of group: It is important that the interest of the partners match and there
will better coordination in order to project successfully.

4. Importance of project based paper publication in standard journals

and in conferences.
After successful completion of project work it is very essential that all
the efforts that are put in must be published in the standard journals
like IEEE and/or published in conference.
There are many paid journals which publish papers without
bothering checking quality and originality of work done. Also you
should make sure that you are giving proper references which are
used in project to avoid copyright issue.
