Mass density ( ), Specific weight ( ), and Specific gravity ( s.g.)
2) Calculate the density, specific weight and volume of chlorine gas at 25 0C and pressure of 600KN/m2

3) (a) Calculate the density, specific weight and volume of oxygen at 100 0F and 15psia, (b) What
would be the temperature and pressure of this gas if it were compressed isentropically to 40% of its
original volume?, (c) If the process described in (b) has been isothermal, what would the temperature

4) (a) what is the change in the viscosity and the density of water between 10 0C and 700C, what is the

The kinematic viscosity of methane at 150C and atmospheric pressure is 1.59 x 10 -5m2/s. Using
Sutherland’s equation and the ideal gas law, find the kinematic viscosity at 2000C and 2 atmospheres.
5) Suppose that glycerine is flowing (T = 200C) in Figure1, and that the pressure gradient, dp/dx = -1.6
kN/m3. What are the velocity and shear stress at a distance of 12mm from the wall, if the space B

distribution for viscous flow between stationary plates is as follows:

Properties of glycerine: s.g. = 1.26, viscosity = 0.62 Ns/m2
6) a) The velocity distribution of flow over a plate is parabolic, with vertex 0.3 m from the plate,
where the velocity is 1.8 m/s. If the viscosity of the fluid is 0.9 Ns/m 2. Find the velocity gradients

velocity gradient, velocity and shear stress
b) The velocity (v) at radius, r, in a pipe of radius, r0, is given in terms of the centre line
velocity, vc, for laminar flow as follows (see equation below): If the centre line velocity in a 1 m

elasticity of the liquid, and the coefficient of compressibility
b) At a depth of 7 km in the ocean, the pressure is 71.6 MPa. Assume a specific weight at the
surface of 10.05 kN/m3 and an average bulk modulus of elasticity of 2.34 GPa for that pressure
range. Find: the change in specific volume between the surface and 7 km.; the specific volume at
7 km; and the specific weight at 7 km.
8) Determine the height that water at 25 0C will rise due to capillary action in a clean 0.6 cm diameter
tube. What will be the height if the diameter is reduced to 0.03 cm?, surface tension of water =

9) Mercury does not adhere to a glass surface, so when a glass tube is immersed in a pool of mercury,
the meniscus is depressed as shown in Figure 2, the surface tension of mercury is 0.514 N/m and the
