METHOD STATEMENT - Cement Plaster

PURPOSE:
This Method Statement describes the construction technology to be undertaken to carried out the application of
paster to receive granite, tile,etc. (rough cast) and paint (smooth finish). .
PLANNING:
The Risk Assessment shall be done prior to the commencement of work. The control measures shall be put into
place to control the identified hazards and Risks. The daily DSTI, Check List or mini risk assessment forms part of
the continuous risk assessment process and will be done daily. All persons involved in the task will be deemed
competent to do so.
All equipment to be used will be deemed safe to use.
INSPECTION:
Inspect area prior to commencement of activities.
Inspect tools and equipment.
Inspect scaffolding if being used.

KEY PLANT / EQUIPMENT REQUIRED:


Spades and shovels.
Trowels.
Aluminium ruler
Sponge
Wood float.Water bowser and or drums.
Wheelbarrows.
Bucket.
Spirit level.
Blockbrushes.
Scaffolding

PPE: Overall, Safety botes, Gloves, Dust masks (mortar mixers), Hard hats, Safety harness if working at
heights.
SEQUENCE OF WORK:
1. General requirements
1.1 Ensure proper working platform and lighting arrangement provided.
Surfaces to receive plastering shall be dry brushed to remove all loose particles, dust, laitance,

efflorescence, etc. and any projecting fins on concrete surfaces shall be hacked off.
Where surfaces are out of line, they shall be brought to level by hacking or dubbing out prior to

commencement of finishing.
All required opening for mechanical & electrical services, conduits pipes, plugs shall be installed and tested

prior to plastering.
1.5 Plastering shall proceed only when the masonry block works are completed.
2. Surface preparation
All surfaces where plaster to be applied shall be made rough.
Concrete surfaces to be cleaned with steel brush and wet. Surfaces to receive a primer coat composed of
1/3 bucket of bonding agent, ½ bucket river sand and ¼ bucket cement. 24hours prior to receive a
roughcast layer composed of 1,5 buckets of cement, 2 buckets of river sand, 2 buckets of water and

reinforced with 2 buckets of bonding agent.
Blocks to receive a roughcast composed of 1,5 buckets cement, 2 buckets of river sand and 2 buckets of
water. All layers to cure in a period of at least 24 hours prior of receiving plaster, depending environment
conditions.
2.2 Level guides shall be provided up to required thickness (dots).
All juntions over the embebed conduits, shall be reinforced with PVC mesh fabric which shall be plugged

nailed or stapled as required at required interval.
3. Plaster application
3.1 Ready cement mortar prior approved shall be applied. Plaster to be layered 2cm thick rough mortar
Apply a layer of mortar on the wall and leave to dry generally 30 to 45 minutes depending on the weather,

this to guarantee mortar adhesion.
Once the plaster starts to stiffen, it should be struck off to a plane surface using a light striker

board/aluminium ruler (straight edge) in movements from top to down.

3.4 Discard the material that was removed (rough cast finish).
Use a wood float to remove the ridges made by the striker board/aluminium ruler and fill any depressions

with the surrounding plaster.
3.6 Use a sponge for a smooth texture finish.
Cover the plastered area and keep it moist to help with the curing when required. Curing time to be

determined considering surrounding environmental conditions.

1. REFER TO RISK ASSESSMENT FOR HAZARDS, RISKS AND CONTROLS
CLOSE OUT:
Housekeeping of the working area.
Cleaning of tools and equipment.
Returning of tools and equipment to the store, report any defects and storeman to ensure the tools and equipment
are being signed off and safe for work again.
