Masterclass for Directors


Leading to Certified Corporate Directorship

DISSERTATION GUIDELINES

On completion of the 3-Day Physical or 4-Day Virtual Training Programme of the


“Masterclass for Directors” each participant must submit a “Dissertation” (not exceeding
5000 words, with font size 12 in MS Word Format), as part of the completion of the Training
Programme. The guidelines for the Dissertation have been outlined below.

1. General Guidelines
Objective
The dissertation offers an opportunity for further development in a specific subject of your choice through
an application oriented proposal.
The individual project is by far the most important single piece of work in the assessment for certification
of 'Masterclass for Directors' programme. It provides the opportunity for you to demonstrate originality
and ability to put into practice covered during the course, and precise and clear written presentation of
your concrete proposal.
Project
You may select any topic out of the modules covered during the Masterclass training, an illustrative list of
which has been provided in the section below (Illustrative List of Topics), and prepare an application
oriented proposal in the form of a Dissertation. It should be in the form of a Project Proposal to be
submitted for implementation to the parent organisation on return from Masterclass.
Traditionally, the dissertation is an independent learning project, which enables you to:
• Identify your own area of interest.
• Explore the area in depth.
• Define your own organizations problem area.
• Experience the process of producing required knowledge and a problem solving approach.
• Plan a project indicating benefits, timeframe with likely cost, and effort required from the
beginning to the end.
• Consolidate your communication, information-seeking and intellectual skills.
• The Dissertation should be in the form of a Project Report to be submitted for implementation to the
parent organisation on return from Masterclass for Directors Training Programme.
The Dissertation must include the results of independent study and research. It may, as far as possible,

relate to participant's own area of work / specialization. Participants should not use data, results or other
contents in their Dissertations, which cannot be made public.
2. Illustrative List of Topics
Following is an illustrative list of subjects for Dissertation, relating to the topics covered during the
Masterclass for Directors:

ii. Duties, Responsibilities and Liabilities of a Director
iii. Corporate Governance
iv. Board Committees
v. Leadership of Corporate Boards
vi. Management of Financial Performance
vii. Role of Internal Audit
viii. Risk Management:
ix. Corporate Sustainability
x. Corporate Social Responsibility
3. Synopsis of the Dissertation
(i) Title page
The very first page of your document must contain your Dissertation title, your name, name of the
program and submission date.
(ii) Acknowledgements
Acknowledgements for the assistance / guidance received from various persons / organisations
in writing your Dissertation. ( up to 300 words) may be detailed here.
(iii) Abstract
The abstract is a short summary or a brief overview of your Dissertation: In about 500 words:
• Describe the aims and objectives and methods / procedures of the project;
• Summarize the main results / findings; and
• State your conclusions / remarks.
(iv) Table of Contents
In the table of contents, list all of your chapters and subheadings and their page numbers as
follows:

(v) List of Figures and Tables
If you have used any tables, graphs / charts / figures in your Dissertation, give a Chapter-wise
serial number and title in the main text of the Dissertation, and list them here under
separate heading e.g.:

# 2 is the number of Chapter and 1 is the serial number of the Figure.
(vi) Research Methodology
In this section, you should describe:
· Your methods of collecting data (e.g. interviews, surveys, archives / secondary
data)
· Your methods of analyzing data (e.g. quantitative / statistical analysis,
discourse /qualitative analysis)
· Tools and materials used (e.g. computer programs, lab equipment etc.)
(vii) Findings of the Study and recommendations
In this section, you can include tables, graphs and charts and to present your data in
a proper way to list the findings, interpret them and offer your recommendations in a
way that would enable your organisation to implement them.
Voluminous data may be put at the end of the Dissertation as part of 'Appendices
and Annexures'.
(viii) Limitations
A discussion of any obstacles you faced in conducting the research and how you
overcame them, such as the time constraint, inadequate access to literature etc.
(ix) Appendices and Annexures
Details of literature (bibliography of publications, websites) and other material used
in the Dissertation should be provided.
Annexures may provide details of data referred to in the main Dissertation.
4. Submission
The Dissertation should be an original contribution written. It should be submitted online in
standard word format, which should include permission for any 3rd party copyright material, if
included in the Dissertation.
The Dissertation is required to be e-mailed to IOD on [email protected] within 45 days
from the date of completion of the Masterclass for Directors.
5. Approval and Certification
After completion of the 3-day Physical or 4-day Virtual Online Masterclass for Directors
Training Programme and submission of a Dissertation which is subject to acceptance of IOD
Training Committee, your training course will be declared complete.
The successful course completion certificate will be dispatched to the participant within 30
days of submission of Dissertation.
