Module 1 - Les #2 Deterinacy and Stability PDF

This document is a lesson on determinacy and stability from the Department of Civil Engineering at Holy Angel University. It defines determinate and indeterminate structures, and explains how to determine if a structure is stable or unstable. Determinate structures can be analyzed using equilibrium equations alone, while indeterminate structures require additional compatibility considerations. A structure is stable if it maintains its shape under loads, and unstable if member reactions allow collapse. Several example problems are provided to classify structures as determinate, indeterminate, stable or unstable, along with their solutions.

LESSON #2: Determinacy and Stability

In this lesson, you will be able to identify no number of determinacy and the redundant for the different
loads applied in a structure, also you will be able to determine stability of the structure.

All concepts sample problems and figures are from the followings books,

Determinate Structures;

Are structure whose unknown external reaction or internal members can be determined using only the
conditions of equilibrium.

Indeterminate Structures;

Are structures whose unknown forces cannot be determined by the conditions of static equilibrium alone and
will require, in addition, a consideration of the compatibility conditions of different parts of the structure for its
complete analysis. An indeterminate structure Furthermore, structures must be stable to be able to serve their
desirable functions.

It is important to establish the determinacy and stability of a structure. A structure is considered stable if it
maintains its geometrical shape when subjected to external forces.

Classify each of the structures as statically

determinate, statically indeterminate, stable, or
unstable. If indeterminate, specify the degree of
indeterminacy. The supports or connections are to be
