Formwork of

Column, Beam
and Wall
Their measurements and inspections
WHAT IS FORMWORK ?

Formwork is temporary or permanent molds into

which concrete or similar materials are poured. In
the context of concrete construction, the falsework
supports the shuttering molds.
MATERIAL USED FOR
FORMWORK

Timber Steel Aluminium

TIMBER FORMWORK

Timber Formwork :
The use of plywood in concrete forming for form facing has
improved the quality of finished concrete.
•The relatively large sheets of plywood have reduced the cost
of building and at the same time have provided smooth
surfaces that reduces cost of finishing of concrete surfaces.
•PIywood is a manufactured wood product consisting a number
of veneer sheets, or plies
•Type of plywood can be grouped as exterior and interior. For
formwork the exterior plywood is used. Adhesive used to bond
the piles in manufacturing of exterior plywood is watertight
and gives maximum number of reuses.

STEEL FORMWORK

Steel Formwork :
• The initial cost of metal formwork is more than timber
formwork but the ııumber of reuses of metal formwork is higher
than that of timber.
• In long run metal formwork can be economical.
• In heavy construction works metal formwork may require a
lifting mechanism to handle the formwork panels or props.
• Steel sheet formwork has the problem of rusting also. To
avoid rusting, in every use the surfaces should be oiled with an
appropriate releasing agent.

ALUMINIUM FORMWORK

• The System is fast, simple, adaptable and very cost effective.

• It is unique because it forms all of the concrete in a building
including walls, floor slabs, columns, beams, stairs, window
hoods, balconies and various decorative features in exact
accordance with the architects' design.
• The dimensional accuracy of the concreted work also results in
consistent fittings of doors and windows.
• The smooth–off form finish of the concrete eliminates the
need for costly plastering.

FORMWORK IN COLUMN

Column Formwork is to be designed to be able to accommodate

relatively high fresh concrete pressures as comparatively small
cross-sections are concreted quickly. Therefore, the joints in
particular are to be formed very carefully and tightly sealed.
FORMWORK IN BEAM

Beam formwork consists of joist clamping connectors,

adjustable fixing beams (side beams) as well as the commonly
used 20 cm or 24 cm high timber beams.
FORMWORK IN SLAB

Slab Formwork essentially consists of a horizontal load-bearing structure which

supports the form lining and transfers the forces into the shoring.
Large-sized slab tables are prefabricated. After use, the slab tables are
transported below the slab to a position which can be reached with the crane
and, from there, moved to the new concreting section. Tables provide a very high
level of safety in particular at the slab edges, and ensure very fast shuttering
times for large-sized areas.
SHUTTERING & CENTERING

• It is a vertical temporary arrangement, part of formwork.

Formwork which supports vertical arrangements is known a
shuttering
• Centering is a temporary arrangement and part of formwork
which is arranged to support horizontal members.
Formwork for floor beams, and slabs is called Centering.
