Hindered Settling

The document discusses different types of equipment used in sedimentation processes. It describes hindered settling, the use of flocculating agents, and examples of sedimentation equipment like the Spitzkasem classifier, circular basins, tube settlers, Disgen gravity thickeners, and the transition layer that forms during batch sedimentation.

Q1

1-Hindered Settling:- it is when Particles are crowded, the settle at

lower rate, the separation of a dilute slurry or suspension by gravity
settling into a clear fluid and a slurry of higher solid content is called
“Sedimentation”

2- Flocculating agents: It is about including strong electrolytes which

reduce the repulsive forces between the charged particles or polymeric
flocculants that may cationic or nonionic in character

3-Spitzkasem classifier : it is one of the equipment of settling and

sedimentation Consists of a series of conical vessels and increasing dia. in
the direction of flow Spitzkasten gravity

4-Circular basins : It is one of the basins used in operations of

settling and sedimentation Circular basins are often referred to as
clarifiers. These basins share some of the performance advantages of the
rectangular basins, but are generally more prone to short circuiting and
particle removal problems

5-Tube Settlers: One method to increase the efficiency or increase the

capacity of clarifiers is to install "false bottoms" in the clarifiers.

6- Disgen Gravity thickener: this is alarge fairly shallow tank with

slow moving radial rakes driven from a central shaft it is bottom may be
flat or shallow cone. Dilute feed slurry flows from an inclined traugh or
launder in to the center of the thickener

7-Transition layer in batch sedimentation : It is the region

formed as a result of sedimentation, in which the concentration of the
solid is greater than the original state and less than settled solids which
the soiled contend varies from that original pulp to that zone
