Is Google Making Us Stupid

The document discusses an article titled "Is Google Making Us Stupid?" by Nicholas Carr. The author reflects on how using the internet, and being exposed to a constant stream of readily available information, may be impacting our brains and ability to focus. While the internet provides information quickly and easily, it may be training our minds to skim content superficially rather than engage in deep, focused reading and learning. The author acknowledges engaging in this type of skimming themselves without realizing it at first. They conclude that while the internet's accessibility has advanced education, we must train ourselves not to become overly reliant on its convenience and instead practice immersive, in-depth learning.

“Is Google Making Us Stupid?

Reflection Paper

Google for me had already been present as far as I can remember. It helped me for the longest

time now and it had not occur to me that it was making me stupid. Carr had written an article titled “is

Google making us stupid?” This had raised many questions in my head as to why he would think like this

or view it in such a way.

As to Carr, he explained as to how his brain was changing in effect of using Google or the

internet in general, making it have less attention span and is unable to concentrate on lengthy readings

that he partakes. I can agree to this as he said it to be, the internet is indeed has lasting changing effects

in our minds and how it processes. He said that we try to adjust to the pace of how internet gives us

information. In my opinion, we have just grown accustomed to how information is spoon fed to us and

how fast paced we can obtain this information have trained our minds to fast too. “Jumping from one

source to the other”. From this, I think that our brain will choose the way how it obtains information

that is needed. It will prefer the more easier and reliable route. That is why it will try to avoid ways of

getting information that will cost too much time. It will choose the using the internet as it is convenient

in both time and effort. This is why we jump from sources to sources as to confirm the validity of the

information obtained.

As for the skimming activity that is studied by the researchers, I can say that it is one hundred

percent true. As I was reading this essay, I was shocked to realize that I was doing the same thing. As I

were reading the whole paragraph, I noticed that I was lacking in depth understanding of what I was

reading. My thoughts’ goal was to finish the text so that I can make this paper. It dawned into me that

what was happening was that, I was skimming through the text as if I was hurrying for something. Which
in my case I am not. So I was intrigued by this. Is it because by using the internet I am exposed to the

readily available information that is not only fascinating but also entertaining. Perhaps this is the cause

why I am always trying to increase my pace because I was feeling behind in the uptake of the

information being fed to me. It had seemed like it was a competition of man versus computer, but man’s

mind can only absorb so much. This causes superficial knowledge to be etched in our memories which

causes us to lack substance in our learnings.

I cannot agree that Google is making us stupid as this is the reason why we are so advanced in

terms of education. I can only say that the way we treat the internet as some life support is so wrong

that it renders us useless without it. For me, training ourselves to not become a slave to the

convenience of the internet is the appropriate way to go. We should practice our in depth learning and

train ourselves that it is okay not to keep up with the information given to you. We must take time in

understanding them. Indulge and immerse yourself to what you are reading as this helps you

understand and retain more information.
