EXPERIMENT 3 Objective and Intro

The document describes Experiment 3 which investigates the plate and frame filter press system. The objectives are to understand the working principle of the plate and frame filter press and investigate the relationships between flow rate, pressure, and thickness of the filter cake. The introduction explains that solid slurries are commonly encountered in manufacturing and need to be separated through mechanical processes like filtration. Plate and frame filter presses consist of alternating plates and frames with a filter cloth that allows filtrate to drain through channels in the plates as solids build a cake on the cloth, filling the frames.

EXPERIMENT 3: FILTER PRESS SYSTEM

OBJECTIVES

1. The working principle of plate and frame filter press was studied and understand.

2. The relationships exists between the rate of flow, pressure and the thickness of filter cake
was investigated.

INTRODUCTION

The solid slurries were often encountered in chemical engineering manufacturing processes.
The solid slurries were needed to be separated through mechanical-physical processes. There
were several classifications of mechanical-separation processes which is filtration, settling
and sedimentation, centrifugal settling and sedimentation, centrifugal filtration and
mechanical size reduction and separation.

In filtration process, the suspended solid particles that in liquid or gas are removed physically
or mechanically using porous medium that retains particles as a separate phase or cake and
passes the clear filtrate. The liquid is made to flow through the filter cloth or paper by a
vacuum on the exit end. the slurry consists of liquid and suspended particles. The passage of
the particles is blocked by the small openings in the pores of the filter cloth. A support with
relatively large holes is used to hold the filter cloth. The solid particles build up in the form of
a porous filter cake as the filtration proceeds. The cake itself function as additional filter for
the suspended particles. As the cake builds up, the resistance to flow also increases.

There were several types of filtration equipment which is classification of filters, bed filters,
plate-and-frame filter presses, leaf filters, and continuous rotary filters. This experiment was
focused on the plate-and-frame filter presses. The filter consists of plates and frames
assembled alternately with a filter cloth over each side of the plate. The plate has channels cut
in them so that clear filtrate liquid can drain down along each plate. The feed slurry is
pumped into the press and flow through the duct into each of the open frames so that slurry
fill the frames. The filtrate flow through the filter cloth and the solids build up as a cake on
the frame side of the cloth. The filtrate flows between the filter cloth and the face of the late
through the channels to the outlet. The filtration is proceeding until the frame is completely
filled with solids. The visual inspection can be made to the if the filtrate is running clear.
When the frame is completely full, the frames and the plate are separated and the cake is
removed. Then the filter is reassembled and the cycle is repeated.
