Energy Profiles Manager

CYME 7.0 Power Engineering Software
A database file (.mdb) and study file (.xst) to use with this tutorial are provided. The explanations below are based on the use of
these files.
The Energy Profiles Manager optional module of the CYME Power Engineering Software is used to perform time range
load flow analysis using a combination of actual meter readings and forecasted loads.

 Profile Database

1. Create a new database using the EnergyProfiles.mdb file provided with this tutorial. To do so, go to the
Database tab of the Explorer Bar and click on the Create link. The EnergyProfile.mdb file is a Single
database and its Type is Microsoft Access.
2. To set the Load Profile database, right-click on the newly created database and select Properties in the
contextual menu. Go to the Load Profile tab, select Microsoft Access as the Database Type and select
EnergyProfiles.mdb in the File Name field. Click on OK.
3. Then, open the EnergyProfiles.xst study file provided with this tutorial.
4. Locate section 7313 and open the Section Properties dialog box.
5. From the Devices group box located in the bottom-left corner of the dialog box, click on Spot Load By
phase.

6. Click on the Profiles button located in the bottom-right corner of the dialog box and
select Residential. The CYME Energy Profiles Manager application will launch and display a calendar
for year 2009 with daily profiles for residential customers.

7. Browse the calendar for March 9th and double-click on the profile to open it. Locate the erroneous value.
From the data grid shown nearby the chart, replace the incorrect value with 33.60 by double-clicking on
the appropriate cell. If the data grid is not displayed, right-click in the plot and select the Data Grid
command from the contextual menu.

8. In the Profile Browser bar, click on Network Demand Profiles and double-click on SOURCE. The
network demand profiles for Winter, Spring and Summer can be displayed (no profile currently exists for
Fall). Select the Spring DAY profile by clicking on it once and copy/paste it in the DAY box under the
Fall tab using the appropriate commands of the Edit menu. Note that the DAY box under the Fall tab
has to be selected to enable the Paste command of the Edit menu.

9. Go to the menu File > Preferences. In the bar on the left-hand side, click on Reports then select a
report folder as shown below. Click on OK.

10. Exit the CYME Energy Profiles Manager module and go back to CYME 7.0.

 Load Flow with Profiles

Let’s start by running a load flow analysis for an entire day based on the profiles.
1. Go to the menu option Analysis > Load Flow with Profiles and select Run.
2. Under the Parameters tab, select Time Range Mode as the time parameter and check the option
Entire Day. Set the date to January 10th, 2009.

3. Under the Networks tab, make sure feeder GA04 is selected.

4. Under the Output tab, check Network Summary in the Global Reports group box and, using the Add
button , add the report Load Flow – Abnormal Conditions to the Reports for Time Intervals
group.

5. In the Charts for Monitored Devices group box, click on the Add button . From the Monitoring
Charts dialog box, first check Voltage Profile in the Charts list, then select the two-winding
transformer 3 in the list of Associated Devices on the right-hand side. Click on OK.

6. Finally, in the Output box at the bottom of the dialog box, enter the path of the report folder, as set in
step 1.7.

7. Click on Save, then on Run. After a few seconds, the CYME Energy Profiles Manager module interface
will be launched automatically.
8. From the Simulation Results tab, expand the folder corresponding to the current date and time as well
as all its sub-folders. The charts and reports can be opened by double-clicking on them.
The voltage profile chart for transformer 3, the furthest from the source, shows that it experiences a low
voltage condition (i.e. below 114 V) for a few hours in the evening. The Network Summary for feeder GA04,
in the Global Reports folder, indicates that the worst abnormal conditions in % take place at 7:00 pm. The
abnormal conditions for 7:00 pm are detailed in the corresponding report of the Time Interval Reports
folder.

9. Exit the CYME Energy Profiles Manager module and go back to CYME 7.0.

Let’s now run the load flow analysis with profiles at 7:00 PM.

10. Go to the menu option Analysis > Load Flow with Profiles and select Run

11. Under the Parameters tab, select Single Time Mode as the time parameter. Set it to January 10th,
2009 at 7:00 PM. Click on Run.
12. Click on the Show Abnormal Conditions button located in the Simulation toolbar to activate the color-
coding layer. A significant portion of the network is highlighted in red, meaning that low voltage
conditions exist.

13. To correct the problem, install a shunt capacitor at node 13868. From the Symbol Bar tab of the
Explorer bar, drag and drop a shunt capacitor on the appropriate node. Select the Id 2700KVAR, then
set:
 the Type to Switched
 the Switched Phase to A, B, and C
 the Control Type to Voltage
 the Initial Status to ON
 the Control Phase to C
 the Close at value to 116.25 V
 the Trip at value to 120 V.

14. Click on OK.

15. Re-run the simulation with the exact same settings and confirm that there are no more low voltage
conditions.
Finally, validate the corrective measure by running a load flow analysis with profiles for three consecutive
days.
16. Go to the menu option Analysis > Load Flow with Profiles and select Run.
17. Select Time Range Mode as the time parameter and uncheck the option Entire Day. Set the time range
from January 9th 2009 at 12:00 AM to January 12th 2009 at 12:00 AM.
18. Click on Run. After a few seconds, the CYME Energy Profiles Manager module interface will be
launched automatically.
19. From the Simulation Results tab, expand the folder corresponding to the current date and time as well
as all its sub-folders. The charts and reports can be opened by double-clicking on them.
