Environmental Science

The document discusses a conceptual model of environmental accountability that shows the relationships between policy, goals, indicators of ecosystem services, and monitoring. It explains that environmental accountability depends on policies, societal goals, measures, and monitoring, all based on ecosystem services and human well-being. It also notes that the ecosystem paradigm can help account for the values of ecosystems, not just their extent or quality, and that ecosystem products or services traded in markets can have their values directly expressed in dollars through contributions to areas like timber, fisheries, and agriculture.

2. Figure 1. A conceptual model of environmental accountability, showing the
relationships among policy, goals, indicators of ecosystem services, and monitoring.

Environmental accountability is a function of policies, societal goals, measures, and

monitoring, all founded in ecosystem services and human well-being. The
ecosystem paradigm offers a path toward accounting for the values, not just the
extent or local quality, of our ecosystems. Where ecosystem products or services
are traded in market, their values can be expressed directly in dollars, for example,
the contribution of ecosystem to production of timber, fisheries, and agricultural
products.
