b) Explain the principle of manufacturing systems, with suitable examples.
c) Consider a two station line where the first station fails on the average every 20 cycles
and the second station averages a failure every 30 cycles. Average repair time is 5
cycles. Find the line availability, (i) if there is no buffer capacity (ii) if a buffer capacity
of 4 exists.
2. a) List the objectives to be considered in determining the layout of a manufacturing
plant.
b) Describe the importance of flexibility and modularity in facilities layout design.
c) i) Apply rank order clustering technique to the part incidence matrix given in below
table 1 to identify logical part families and machine groups. Parts are identified by
letters and machines are identified numerically.

ii) Explain the different methods of codification system in group technology with
suitable example for each type.
3. a) Discuss the strategic implications of installing Flexible Manufacturing system (FMS).
b) Briefly explain the different types of FMS layout configurations.
c) i) A flexible machining system consists of two machining workstations and a
load/unload station. Station 1 is the load and unloads stations. Stations 2 perform
milling operations and consist of two servers (two identical: CNC milling
machines). Station 3 has one server that performs drilling (one CNC drill press).
The stations are connected by a part handling system that has four work carriers.
The mean transport time is 3 min. The FMS produces two types of parts, A and
B. The part mix fractions and process routings for the two parts are presented in

the table below (Table 2). The operations frequency 1.0 for all operations.
Determine maximum production rate of the FMS, corresponding production rate
of each product, utilization of each production and no of busy severs at each
station.

ii) Critically compare quantitative and qualitative approaches to designing
process layouts with suitable example.
4. a) List the basic types of material handling equipment. For each type, describe the
environment where its usage is appropriate.
b) Discuss the difference in just-in-time and traditional rules for control of Automate
Guide Vechicle (AGV).
c) Given the AGVS layout shown in Figure 1. Vehicles travel counterclockwise around
the loop to deliver loads from the load station to the unload station. Loading time at
the load station = 0.75 min, and unloading time at the unload station = 0.50 min. It is
desired to determine how many vehicles are required to satisfy demand for this
layout if a total of 40 delivery/hr must be completed by the AGVS. The following
performance parameters are given: vehicle velocity = 50m/min, availability = 0.95,
traffic factor = 0.90, and operator efficiency does not apply, so E = 1.0. Determine:
(a) travel distances loaded and empty, (b) ideal delivery cycle time, and (c) number of
vehicles required to satisfy the delivery demand.

5. a) How can merging be represented in Petrinet model? Give example.
b) Construct a Petrinet model for two way traffic light system with yellow, green and red
lights.
c) Consider the manufacturing system comprises a single CNC machining center which
produces parts according to Resume policy of Discard policy. Model the sequence of
activities for the above system using Petrinets.
