About the Teacher

I am Miss Colleen Federici, and I am so excited to work with

you and your child this year as they continue to grow and develop
as independent learners and Disciples of Christ! This will be my
sixth year teaching at St. Mary Star of the Sea, and I am looking
forward to a new year of learning and growth! I earned my
Bachelor’s degree in Early Childhood Education from the
University of Dayton in 2013 and completed my Master’s in
Literacy in 2015. Before I came to St. Mary’s, I taught third grade
at St. Paul Catholic School in Owosso for two years as part of my
Master’s program.
I am originally from a small suburb of Cleveland, Ohio,
where I grew up with two sisters and one brother. My brother
now has five children of his own, and I am very proud to be an
aunt. My niece and nephews have taught me a lot about children,
and I really treasure the time that I get to spend with them. This
summer I became a godparent for my best friend’s son Oliver
Jude, and I’m counting down the days until I get to see them
again!
Catholic education has played a huge role in my life, making
me the person I am today. I attended Catholic schools from
Kindergarten through graduate school. I love that my job offers
me the freedom to talk about and continue to grow in faith with
my students. I am eager to journey with this second grade class
through sacrament preparation and humbled that I have been
chosen to accompany them during this important time.
I look forward to all of the challenges and triumphs that this
year will bring! I am confident that, with your support and
collaboration, this will be a great year in second grade for all of
us! If you have questions or concerns throughout the school year,
please contact me at school 784-8811 or e-mail me at
[email protected].

God Bless!

Snack

We will have a snack each day, around 9:45. Please send in a

nutritious snack for your child.

If your child has any food allergies, please let me know. He/she
may keep some snacks in the classroom for days when we have
treats that he/she may not be able to eat.

Birthdays

Your student may bring in a prepackaged treat to celebrate

his/her birthday. Please avoid any treats with artificial food dyes
as many children are sensitive to these dyes. The treat will be
shared at snack time. If you send in a drink, please make sure it
does not need to be poured. Students with summer birthdays,
may celebrate their half birthday if they wish, just let me know
the date they want to celebrate.

** Please do not have your child bring birthday party invitations

to school. This avoids hurt feelings for those not invited.

Class List

Currently, there are _12_ students in the class. __7__ Boys and
__5__ Girls.

Homework

Students will be copying their assignments in their daily planner.

Please sign their planner daily after you have looked over
their homework and checked for notices in their homework folder.
If you need to ask a question, or let me know a bit of
information, please use the space in the homework agenda to
write me a note. I will check this daily. Expect about 30 minutes
of homework a day. This includes spelling words, flashcards,
reading, skills worksheets, and projects. In addition, your child
may need to bring home work that was not finished in class. If
your student is spending significantly more time than this on
homework, please contact me.

Make-up Work

When a student has an excused absence, I will fill out a form with
the work that needs to be made up. We do many hands-on
projects in class, which may not be able to be made up so please
keep absences to a minimum!

Flashcards

Students need to master their addition and subtraction facts this

year. Please practice these at least three times a week at home.
With practice, this will become automatic and the children should
not need to count on their fingers.

Timed Tests

The students will be taking timed math fact tests a few times per
week.

At-Home Projects

The students will have at least one at-home project to complete

each quarter. These at-home projects may include Saint reports,
animal power point projects, dinosaur dioramas, etc. Look for the
directions and due dates in their homework folder. Unfinished
projects significantly affect report card grades!

Prayers

The following are a list of prayers that the students will recite in
the second grade. A prayer booklet will be kept in their
homework folder for practice and notation of progress. Please
pray these with your child every day at home.
Morning Offering Prayer Before Snack Grace Before Meals
Grace After Meals Guardian Angel Prayer Act of Contrition
Our Father Hail Mary Confession Responses

Sacraments

We will celebrate the Sacraments of Reconciliation and First

Communion this year, and I will get you the dates as soon as
they are finalized. Jesus Day, our all-day First Communion
retreat, will be during school hours the week prior to the
sacrament, and we are always in need of volunteers. There will
be two Parent Meeting for all parents of students receiving the
Sacraments, one before each is celebrated. Look for reminder
notices in homework folder.

Classroom Rules/Consequences

The students will help draft the classroom rules, which will then
be signed by each student and posted in the classroom. They will
be expected to uphold these rules and to follow The Golden Rule.
We will also have class meetings to deal with recurring issues. I
use Class Dojo www.classdojo.com to keep in contact with you
about your child’s behavior, both positive and negative. Please
create an account using the sign up information provided at
parent night.

Students will be recognized for good behaviors. Awards may be in

the form of verbal compliments, treats, extra recess, notes on
Class Dojo or in the planner, and award certificates.

For disruptive behaviors, the process for behavioral redirection

will be as follows:
1. Verbal or nonverbal re-direction
2. Warning given by talking to them in close proximity
3. Separation from the group and asked to work at a focus
table
4. Loss of some or all of a recess and fill out reflection sheet
5. Sent to the office, and the parent will be contacted if
there are continuous disruptive behaviors
*Behaviors that are intended to injure others may result in
an in-school suspension or an out-of-school suspension.
