LESSON PLAN GUIDE

TEKS: SCI.5.1A 5.1B
Objective: The students will be able to prepare and organize their Science Notebooks that will be used
throughout the year. In addition, the students will be able to outline various safety guidelines.

Grade: 5TH

Subject: SCIENCE

Task Analysis: What lang. must be taught: Disciplinary Core

What skill must be taught: Students will demonstrate knowledge of safe practices and rules they
remember from previous years, using materials appropriately, by explaining and illustrating,
constructing a student science notebook, the class safety rules for investigations.

Strategy to Teach Language: Workstations, Cooperative Learning Groups; Repetitive exposure to words;
Written and Oral Speech

Assessment:

Science Notebook Rubric - I will be using periodically during the year to assess their Science Notebooks. I
can use the notebooks for assessment purposes (a large portion of my students' science grades are
based on their notebooks). Their notebooks are their own and should contain their own thoughts,
observations and drawings of the science and engineering projects we will be doing throughout the
year.

Strategies for Success:

Strategies: Scaffolding-Modeling w/ thinking aloud; Cooperative Grouping

Element of Technology: PowerPoint: Creating the Science Notebook. Show each slide and remember to
pause when students are creating the page indicated on the slide. I will have created a notebook prior to
the lesson to display to students a finished example of a notebook, however I will display several
examples on the white board for students to know my expectations.
Learning Styles Addressed:

Visual- PowerPoint; Physical example of the Teacher’s Science Notebook.; Pictures of Safety
things -equipment or people doing safety procedures.

Auditory- Reciting information; Video; Class discussion

Kinesthetic- Using hand gestures- to Introduce one of the safety rules: hand washing

Resources/ Materials needed:

3 Ring Notebook, Spiral notebook (I used 100-page spiral notebooks)•1 sheet of plain copy paper•
colored pencils, crayons, or markers• black marker for writing the name and class period• clear contact
paper or clear tape to maintain the covers of the notebook• copy of Table of Contents, Science
Notebook Guidelines, Instructions, and Rubric• Attachments/ Handout: What I Know about Safety (1 per
student)•Safety Contract Handout for student and parent or legal guardian (1 per student)

Higher Order Question to ask:

Opportunity to Ask student’s “4–HOTS” QUESTIONS”:

1. Why do we recycle cut up paper and does anything go in the recycle bin?
2. When should they use their Science notebooks?
3. Where are all the safety rules and guidelines?
4. How they know what is expected of them as it pertains to their grades? Allow time for students
to brainstorm ideas before showing the four answers listed on the PowerPoint. Students need
the opportunity to share their thinking; their ideas may be more creative than those noted on
the slide.

Hook:

I am going to play a short 59 second video on safety at school during a Science Class and Lab

Closure:

Handout the EXIT TICKET QUESTION -Each student will write on the ticket their answer. Each student
should be able to Summarize the importance of the science notebook with the Guiding Question: In
what ways does maintaining a science notebook enhance the perception of science concepts? Answers
will vary but may include the idea that a science notebook is a place for reflection and using
metacognition (thinking about one’s thinking).
1. Teacher Input / Direct Instruction / Modeling:

Workstations, Cooperative Learning Groups

2. Student Activities / Guided Practice: Questioning •Cause and Effect• Table Walks
(Workstations, Differentiated Small Group Instruction at Teacher Table

Explore/Explain/Elaborate - 60 minutes
I tell the students to get out one of the spiral notebooks they brought as their supplies for the beginning of the
year. We request a voluntary supply list for each student to bring for back to school which includes spiral
notebooks for each of their subjects. I like the spiral notebook because the pages are bigger, it tends to stay
together longer, and it is cheaper than a composition notebook. Of course, it is up to the me as to what type of
notebook I want the students to use. I also have the students get out a pencil, glue sticks, colored pencils or
crayons or markers (I prefer colored pencils, but most students love using markers, which is okay), and a black
sharpie marker. I start by giving each student a blank sheet of copy or printer paper and I tell them to glue this to
their front cover of their notebook. I tell them to trim the paper as needed and that they can cover the 3 holes if
their spiral has this. Distribute the Handout: What I Know about Safety to each student. Instruct them to write
and draw safety rules ideas they remember from previous years in their Science Notebooks under the title "What
is Science? I tell them that they will design their Science Notebook cover, however they will need to keep it
science related and to think about the ideas and drawings they wrote about "What is Science?". I show them
some pictures of things we will be learning in science to give them some ideas. When the students' notebook
covers are complete, they will cover them with clear contact paper so that they can last throughout the school
year.

Modifications / Accommodations:

Adapt the time allotted and allowed for learning, task completion- I will give an individualized timeline
for those students Sp.Ed who need it. Use enlarged visual aids and give several hands-on instructions.

Comprehensible Input Techniques:

Instructing the students on what to do

Coached Construction-demonstrate and present

Monitoring

Adapt my speech

DELIVERY PLAN

OBJECTIVE/ Rigor:
In this unit, students will learn about the tools and safety guidelines that are necessary for conducting
science investigations. They will also be setting up a Science Notebook and learning about the difference
between a Table of Content and Safety Guidelines. 5E Lesson Planning: I plan most of my science lessons
using the BSCS 5E Lesson Model: Engage, Explore, Explain, Elaborate, and Evaluate.

OPENING/ Retrieval :
I am going to play a short 59 second video on safety at school during a Science Class and Lab
https://youtu.be/jS86pCpOytQ Science Safety by Jeanne Feeney

TEACHER INPUT/ Relevance:

I will put up a Power Point that will outline a layout of the process explaining in text and I
pictures demonstrating the technique I want the students to utilize for the Notebook.

MODEL/ Routing:
Workstations, Cooperative Learning Groups - I start this lesson by showing the students the
following Science Note booking PowerPoint presentation about Science Notebooks and how
important they are to utilize when conducting investigations and projects.

GUIDED PRACTICE/Retaining / Rehearsing:

In this Unit I will be introducing the students to the different Next Generation Science Standards
by showing them an overview of the Disciplinary Core Ideas, Crosscutting Concepts, and Science
& Engineering Practices. Students will demonstrate knowledge of safe practices and rules they
remember from previous years, using materials appropriately, by explaining and illustrating,
constructing a student science notebook, the class safety rules for investigations.
INDEPENDENT PRACTICE:
Questioning •Cause and Effect• Table Walks (Workstations, Differentiated Small Group
Instruction at Teacher Table)
Explore/Explain/Elaborate
Creating the Science Notebook

CHECK FOR UNDERSTANDING/Recognizing:

Students will be able to verbally recite analytically the characteristics of the purpose for a
Science Notebook. Why do we recycle cut up paper and does anything go in the recycle bin?
When should they use their Science notebooks? Where are all the safety rules and guidelines?
How they know what is expected of them as it pertains to their grades?

ASSESSMENT:
I can use the notebooks for assessment purposes (a large portion of my students' science
grades are based on their notebooks). Their notebooks are their own and should contain their
own thoughts, observations and drawings of the science and engineering projects we will be
doing throughout the year
