Lesson 1
At the end of this lesson, you are expected to:
• divide whole numbers by decimals up to 2 – decimal places and
vice versa.

INTRODUCTION
Most of us know how to divide a whole number by a whole number. There are
many different algorithms that can be used to see how many times a divisor fits into a
dividend when both the numbers are whole, but what do we do if the divisor is a
decimal. In other words, how do we divide a whole number by a decimal? This is what
we are going to explore and learn how to do.

WHAT’S IN
(Communication)

Let us recall some of the algorithms which we can use in dividing whole
numbers by decimals.

A. Changing Decimals to Fraction.

Example: Change 0.25 to fraction.

List down the decimal over 1. 0.25
1
Multiply the top and bottom number
by 10 for every digit to the left of the
decimal point.
0.25 100 25
𝑥 =
Note: Since there are 2 digits from the left of 1 100 100
the decimal point, we have to multiply the top
and bottom number by 100.

Reduce the fraction to its simplest 25 1

form, if needed. 100 4

WHAT’S NEW
(Character, Critical Thinking, and Collaboration)

As of May 21, 2020, there are 846 confirmed COVID – 19 total

deaths. This is about 6% of the total number of confirmed cases in the
Philippines. Around how many COVID – 19 cases do we have?

Let’s analyze:
1. How many confirmed deaths as of May 21, 2020?
2. About how many percent of the total number of confirmed cases?
3. How do you feel about the number of confirmed deaths? Why?
4. With the help of your parent, can you think of another way so that we can
prevent the spread of the virus aside from the safety measures issued by the
Department of health? Why? Please write your answer inside the box.

For numbers 3 and 4 only. (Please write your answers here)

WHAT IS IT
(Communication)
To divide a whole number by a decimal, we just integrate some steps to the
process of dividing whole numbers, and these steps can be easily managed.
Let’s consider the problem stated above.
To get the number of confirmed cases, we have to change 6% into decimal
and divide it from the total number of deaths. So, 6% in decimal is 0.06. Therefore,
the number sentence would be 846 ÷ 0.06 = N.

Another way of dividing whole number by decimal is by following the rules in
dividing fractions. Let’s consider another problem.

Problem 2. What is 96 ÷ 0.03?

Step 1. Change the dividend and divisor into fractions.

96 ÷ 0.03

Division of a decimal by a whole number has a similarity to whole number
division. We use division or long division of decimals by whole numbers as if the
decimals were whole numbers ignoring the decimal points. In the quotient that we get,
we place the decimal point in the same spot as in the number that is being divided.
Let’s consider the problem below.

Problem 3. What is 0.84 ÷ 6?

Step 1. Divide as whole numbers.
