To wrap up this trial, I would like to start off by saying that Columbus didn’t actually
discover the Americas. It has been proven that the Vikings stepped foot on that land first and that
makes him no hero. Columbus has done many horrible deeds which no one should’ve gone
through, but sadly because of him many innocent people went through things that have scarred
them for the rest of their lives.
I would like to start off with the fact that Columbus has supervised the selling of young
native girls into sexual slavery. This is really sickening because they looked for girls around the
ages 9-10 and most of the men had desire for girls that age. It’s disgusting that Columbus has
supervised this because many of those poor, innocent, and young girls could’ve achieved many
things in life but sadly were sold to old men for their pleasure. If Columbus wanted to be a hero
then he should’ve stopped this horrible crime instead of encouraging it. If you think about, those
girls could’ve been anyone’s daughter and sister which makes it really sad because at this young
age they had to go through something so disgusting. Even in Columbus’ log he casually wrote
about this huge crime as if it was no big deal, when in reality it was. In his diary he wrote, “A
hundred castellanoes are easily obtained for a women as for a farm. And it is very general and
there are plenty of who go around looking for girls, those from 9-10 are in demand”. Is he going
to deny his own diary entry or going to make up an excuse? His diary really showed the dark
side of Columbus. It might didn’t affect him in any way because his men were happy which
means there aren’t any issues. He never cared about any of the natives that were severely being
affected by his actions because he was getting whatever he needs which were, girls, gold, and
land.
The next thing that I would like to point out is that when he found the Americas, he
seized the tribe living there (Arawaks) and seized their land. Not only that but he also enslaved
them. First of all, he enters THEIR land and enslaves the owners of that land. Columbus
should’ve respected them and made a fair decision with the Arawaks instead of making them
into their slaves. Columbus basically took advantage because the Arawaks were a really kind,
gentle and peaceful tribe. It was really disrespectful of him to do that because when one of his
ships (the santa maria) got shipwrecked, they helped him fix it up. Within 2 years of Columbus
arriving to the New World, half the population of the original natives were wiped out. The reason
behind that is Columbus. All of those poor lives passed away because Columbus forced them to
work in Gold Mines. While working, many died of exhaustion because that’s why hard he would
make them work. I think what Columbus did wasn’t fair at all because the Arawaks wanted
peace and helped them in many ways and this is how Columbus pays them back. If someone
gives someone else kindness they expect kindness but all they got was hatred. It would’ve been
reasonable if the Arawaks were really mean to them from the start which caused the hatred and
cruelness but they did nothing wrong, which makes Columbus the crueler one since he enslaved
them without any specific reason.
When Columbus started running out of natives for gold mining he deported the rest of the
population to an island called Haiti, leaving all the islands deserted. Once the slaves that were
deported from Puerto Rico and Cuba started dying out due to work and torture, he looked over to
Africa and established what was known as the transatlantic slave trade. That shows that
Columbus is guilty of many murders even if he didn’t actually kill them. He made them work so
hard in the heat that they all eventually died a horrible death. He didn’t even care about their
deaths and just kept getting more and more from different places around the world. He has a lot
of blood on his hands and many crimes were done by him. It’s sad how he tortured/killed so
many innocents but Queen Isabella still excused all of them.
Also, all of this information that I have put in front of you, doesn’t only show you my
point but it’s to show what all of these locales have been through because of Columbus. Our
witnesses clearly proved what we have to say about Columbus’s heinous deeds.
