A. First appearance.

 How this organization has been created?


It all began in 1946, when delegates from 25
countries met at the Institute of Civil Engineers
in London and decided to create a new
international organization to facilitate the
international coordination and unification of
industrial standards. Until February 26,1947 the
organization promotes worldwide proprietary,
industrial, and commercial standards.

 What difference did they made in their


debut?

ISO was founded with the idea of answering a
fundamental question: what is the best way of
doing this?
In 1949, ISO moved into a small, private houses
in Geneva. In the early 1950s the Central
Secretariat has 5 members in staff.
In 1951, ISO first standards reference
temperature for industrial length
measurements, is published.

B. Worldwide

 What is the purpose of this organization?

It is a global network of the world leading
standardizers; its job is to make
international standardization. Through their
members in 164 different countries, they
bring together experts from all over the
world to develop international
standardization. It is a non-profit
organization, selling their standards allow
them to finance their development in a
neutral environment, to maintain them, and
to new ones.
 What are the benefits of this international
organization?
a. Conforming to the standard set, help to
reassure consumers that businesses they
buy from are operating in a safe way,
producing reliable goods without unduly
harming the environment.
b. Economics benefits:
Research from many companies suggested
that these standards help to boost the

economy. In the UK, $8.2billion is thought
to have been contributed to annual growth
in Growth Domestic Product (GDP).
c.Business benefits:
 Cutting cost through improvement
in systems and processes.
 Increasing customers satisfaction
with improvement in safety and quality.
 The ability to access new markets.
 Reducing the impact of environment
d. Consumer benefits:
 Consumer confidence can be increased
when they see the International
Standards logo.
 Increase confidence when it comes to
particular aspects of products is key too,
such as toy safety.
 Consumers are included in the process
of creating and writing International
Standards that are as broad as possible.

 What are the key principles in standards
development?
 ISO standards respond to a need to the
market:
an industry sector or group communicates
the need for standard to its national
member who then contacts ISO.
 ISO standards are based on global
expert’s opinion:
ISO standards are developed by group of
experts from all over the world, whom
negotiate all aspects of the standard,
including its scope, key definition and
content.
 ISO standards are developed though a
multi-stakeholders process:
The technical committees are made up of
experts from the relevant industry, but also
from consumer association, academia,
NGOs and government.

 ISO standards are based on a consensus:
Developing ISO standards is consensus-
based approach and comments from all
over stakeholders are taken into accounts.

Till date ISO has published more than 21,500


standards. Under these many standards there
are two types certifiable and non-certifiable
standard. Non-certifiable standard might be
just guidelines. The most popular standards
are:

System: Is a set of standards that
helps organizations ensure they meet
customers and stakeholders needs.

2. ISO 14000- Environmental
Management: It provide practical
tools for businesses to manage their
environmental responsibilities.
3. ISO 27000- Information Security

4. ISO 22000- Food Safety
Management System: allows a

that they have a food safety

standards that aims to provide a practical and
workable quality management system (QMS)
which focuses more on continual improvement
and customer satisfaction. Organizations use

consistently provide product and services that
meet customer and regulatory requirement.

audit and management review meeting which
are two tools for measuring improvements and
