Beijing police are holding a 22-year-old female teacher suspected of carrying out abuse at
a nursery school.
Officers are probing claims children at the nursery - run by RYB Education Inc - were
pricked with needles, fed pills and stripped naked.
RYB says it "deeply apologises" for the matter, which has sparked outrage in China,
where there've been a number of scandals involving childcare centres.
Parents told local media they had discovered needle marks on their children's bodies and
that their children were fed pills or syrup before their naptime.
One father told state broadcaster CCTV that his child had said that every day after lunch
they would be given two white pills, and told to "go to sleep".
The case has sparked an intense outcry and reignited anxieties over childcare standards in
China, which has seen other cases of abuse at nurseries in recent years.
The incident comes weeks after a Shanghai childcare centre was alleged to have abused
several toddlers.
National news report
MANILA - Justice Secretary Vitaliano Aguirre is set to take the witness stand in the
impeachment proceedings against Chief Justice Maria Lourdes Sereno this week, the
chairperson of the House justice committee said Sunday.
Among the grounds in the impeachment complaint was Sereno’s alleged manipulation
and delaying of Aguirre's request to transfer the cases against Maute gunmen outside of
Mindanao for security reasons.
Aguirre wrote to Sereno requesting the transfer the trial of Maute suspects to Luzon or
Visayas, but the SC instead moved the venue to either Iligan City or Cagayan de Oro
City.
The Justice Secretary then wrote a second letter pointing out that the 2 cities were too
close to Maute supporters in Marawi City. He also requested that the suspects be detained
in Taguig City.

The Blue Eaglets pulled away in the second period, 35-17, and never looked back to
extend their streak of double-digit victories.
Weather news report
State weather bureau PAGASA on Friday said it is monitoring the possible development
of a "weak La Niña" in the country.
"We're not ruling out the possibility that by the end of the year ay magkaroon ng weak La
Niña episode sa central equatorial pacific," PAGASA weather forecaster Chris Perez said
in an interview on radio DZMM.
The weak La Niña is expected to bring "near normal to above normal rainfall" over the
holiday season, Perez said.
Despite the possibility of a weak La Niña, high temperature may still be experienced in
low lying areas such as Center Luzon. Areas in mountainous regions, however, may have
cooler temperatures, he said.
Perez said the isolated rainshowers experienced in Manila and other parts of the country
are not effects of the possible La Niña, but are brought by tail end of a cold front.
