Pressure Testing & QC Test Pack
Pressure Testing & QC Test Pack
Purpose
The pressure test is conducted with the
requirement of code & standard such as,
ASME Sec. VIII div. 1 & 2, ANSI B31.1,
B31.3, API 650, API 620 & API 1104 to
ensure the leak tightness of system.
Definition
Hydrostatic test/pneumatic is performed
to evaluate integrity and service
requirement of piping systems, tanks,
vessel/column, …etc. through testing at
1.5 times of design pressure.
Tools, Plants, Instruments and Materials
(…continued.)
Tools, Plants, Instruments and Materials
Inspection and test reports completely filled and verified, as per ITP.
Covering sheet to record the test results and signatures of all concerned
parties.
Temporary piping manifold should be welded with proper care and tested as per
design standards.
Confirmation that the Test Pack going to be tested has been mechanically
completed and no welding work is left to be done.
(…continued.)
General Arrangements for Pressure Testing
Pressure Safety valve & Pressure gauge are calibrated.
Pressure gauge scale must be 1.5- 4 times the test pressure for ease of display,
Same criteria should be used for selection of recorder (if applicable).
Use at least two pressure gauges for testing of one circuit, one at highest point
and other at lowest point.
The Test Pack has been signed and agreed by all concerned
i.e. DESCON (QC), client, …etc.
Pressure holding/observation.
Note: Acceptance criteria should be client specs., approved MS, referred code & standard like,
ASME Sec. VIII div. 1&2, ANSI B31.3, B31.1, API 650, API 620 & API 1104 accordingly.

Safety Precautions
All piping including skid mounted packages shall be tested after installed in final position, even though certain
items may have been previously shop tested unless specified in the contract. All flanged joints, which are
made after the pressure test, shall be inspected during the leak test conducted before or during start-up.
Pressure gauges and pressure recorders shall be calibrated before use. Calibrated interval shall not exceed
one month. A minimum of two pressure gauges shall be applied indicated the latest calibration date.
Recording gauges shall be used where it is advisable to keep a permanent record. All gauges shall have a
range such that the test Pressure is within 30% & 80% of the full range calibration. Certificates shall be made
available to inspection personnel prior to commencement of the Pressure Test.
Bleed valve shall be provided to protect piping and equipment from over pressure even though there is a
provision of a pressure relieving device. This bleed valve shall be readily accessible during the test and shall
be pre-piped to nearest sewer drain.
The system under test shall be protected from over pressure by installing relief valves of adequate capacity
set to relieve at 5% above the test pressure.
Isolation valve shall be provided at the point where the temporary test piping connects to the equipment or
piping under pressure test.
When filling, the test fluid shall be injected at the lowest point in the system to minimize the risk of entrapped
air. All vents shall be opened. Filling shall take place upstream of any check valves, unless the disc has been
removed and upstream of any positive displacement of turbine meters where the reverse rotation could cause
damage.
When draining the test fluid the system shall be vented slowly to avoid excessive vacuum.
