Capstone Portfolio Template: Revised 2015-2016

This document provides a template for a capstone portfolio that will document an engineering design process. The template includes sections for introducing the problem and design requirements, generating and selecting a solution, constructing and testing a prototype, and evaluating the results. Each section prompts the inclusion of specific information, such as describing the problem and its impacts, research conducted, design requirements, materials and safety procedures used, test plans, data collection, conclusions, and recommendations. The portfolio template aims to gather both process and product information to inform a capstone exhibition poster.

Revised 2015-2016
Introduction
The team Capstone Portfolio represents the biography of the Capstone organized around the
engineering design process components. The Capstone Portfolio is used as a source of information to
prepare the Capstone Exhibition Poster and contributes to the Capstone Exhibition mark.

 Each team has one portfolio

 Portfolio is used to gather information, both process and products, for each component of the engineering
design process
 Each team is assigned a TEAM NUMBER
 Each team’s Portfolio Name MUST follow this format

Year-Semester Number-Team Number

2015-1-Team Number

One team member sets up the portfolio following the Portfolio Template and makes sure all team members
have access to the portfolio.

I. Present and Justify a Problem and Solution

Requirements
Egypt Grand Challenge(s)
Which Egyptian Grand Challenge(s) are you addressing, and why are they important to address?

Problem to be Solved
What specific problem are you addressing?

What will happen if this problem is not solved?

What might happen if this problem is solved?

Research
What topics did you research? Which topics are related to the problems and which are related to
possible solutions?

What sources did you use for your information?

What did your research teach you about the problem you are addressing?

Revised 2015-2016
What did your research teach you about the solutions that have been tried?

List your sources in APA format

Other Solutions Already Tried

What is the current solution to this problem?

What other solutions have been tried?

Why did they work or why did they not work well?

What lessons can you learn from their attempts to solve this problem?

Design Requirements
What characteristics would a successful solution have?
(Example: A single-family dwelling would be affordable, use local materials, not produce much waste
during the building, make use of rain water, last a long time, etc. )

What could I measure to know if each of these characteristics were met?

II. Generating and Defending a Solution

Selection of Solution
Describe the solution you decided to pursue.

How will this solution meet the design requirements you have chosen?

Selection Prototype
Which design requirements did you choose for your prototype?

In what ways can your prototype be tested? Can it be tested to show whether it meets the design
requirements you chose?

III. Constructing and Testing a Prototype

Materials and Methods
List the materials you used to make your prototype.

List the materials you used to make your prototype. Include the cost of each material and the source
for each material.

Revised 2015-2016
List the safety precautions you took to ensure your team is being safe.

Test Plan
List the design requirements you have chosen to test with your prototype.

List the steps for each test to conduct on the prototype

Is this test plan written in a way that supports repetition and testing by others?

Data Collection
List all data collected in your testing here

What measurement tool did you use? What level of precision did you use in measurement?

Provide a visual representation of your data and results. The best visual representations tell the story
of your results without the need for additional writing.

IV. Evaluation, Reflection, Recommendations

Discussion
What conclusions do you reach from the data you collected?

Was your test and your measurement accurate enough to draw conclusions?
Does the data demonstrate whether the prototype met the identified design requirements?

Recommendations
What recommendations do you have for future work in this area?

What would you tell another team who wanted to start where you stopped on your solution to help
them?

Learning Outcomes
Which five discipline learning outcomes did you identify as related to your Design Challenge?

Explain how each identified learning outcome was transferred to your Capstone.
