Lecture 5 - Homework

This homework document asks the student to calculate fault currents at different points in an electrical system based on given cable sizes from a previous homework. It also asks the student to calculate the total fault loop impedance for a radiant heater circuit, determine if a 20A MCB breaker will trip in required times, and size earth cables for each circuit based on a table from the AS/NZS 3000 standard.

Electrical Design & Protection

Week 5 Homework

1. Based on the cable sizes from Homework 3, calculate the fault current at the
Transformer, the MSB, DB‐1 & DB‐2.
Cable 1 = 4‐1c x 400mm2 Al XLPE/PVC
Cable 2 = 1‐4c x 35mm2 Cu PVC
Cable 3 = 1‐4c x 50mm2 Cu XLPE/PVC
Radiant heater cable = 1‐2c 2.5mm2 Cu TPS
2. Calculate the total fault loop impedance at the radiant heater. Does a 20A MCB, type
C curve trip within the required times as specified in AS/NZS 3000?
o Size the earth cables for each cable based on table 5.1 of AS/NZS 3000.
o There is no earth cable connected between the transformer and the main
switchboard.
o Ignore the impedance of the earth electrode paths.
