Objective:
To investigate the Use of JFET as a Constant Current Source & as Chopper
Apparatus:
DC power supply, nFET, Multimeter, Breadboard, Resistor
Circuit Diagram:
Constant Current Source Chopper
Theory:
Constant Current Source:
A constant current source can provide constant current to a load irrespective of its value. It is analogous to a constant
voltage source which can provide a constant voltage to a variety of load values. A JFET can be used as a constant current
source due to near horizontal lines in its drain characteristics. As it was established in last section, the circuit operates in its
constant current region when VDS is greater than pinch off voltage; we exploit this property of JFET to achieve a constant
current source using the circuit shown above. Maximum value of R D for which the circuit operates as a constant current
source is designed using the following expression:
𝑉DD − 𝐼D 𝑅D > |𝑉p |
Chopper:
A chopper is an analog switch that can be turned on and off at a rapid rate by a periodic sequence of pulses. It is used to
covert a slowly varying signal into a series of pulses whose amplitudes vary slowly in the same way. A chopper is an
example of a modulator, in this case a pulse amplitude modulator (PWM).
As shown in the circuit above, a sinusoidal signal flows through FET only when pulse allows it. If we want a certain (great
percentage) of vs available as vL, voltage divider theorem can help to design the value of RL:
𝑅L
𝑣L = ( )𝑣
𝑅 L + 𝑟c c
Procedure:
Constant Current Source:
Use equation 1 to design maximum value of R D while VDD=20V, ID=10mA and Vp=3V are given
Use a variable resistor as shown in the circuit, vary its value and record ID in a table, stop where the current is no longer
constant, compare this value of resistor with the one designed in last step
Chopper:
Set frequency of Sine wave as 1KHz and of pulse equal to 5kHz and draw input & output waveforms in the table
Repeat with sine wave having the same frequency while frequency of pulse is increased to 10 kHZ
Repeat with sine wave having the same frequency while frequency of pulse is increased to 15 kHZ
Chopper:
Chopper:
