Question 1

The quantity of milk in a bottle may be assumed to have a normal distribution. A

random sample of 16 bottles was taken and the quantity of milk was measured,
with the following results, in ml.

1005, 1003, 998, 1001, 1002, 999, 1000, 1001,

1007, 1003, 1010, 1001, 1003, 1002, 1005, 995

(a) Determine a 90% confidence interval for the mean quantity of milk in a
bottle.
(b) Test at 5% significance level whether the mean quantity of milk is at least
950ml.
(10 marks)

Question 2

Tests of product quality using inspectors can lead to serious error problems.
Benson and Ohta (1986) evaluated the performance of inspectors in a new
company using novice and experienced inspectors. Each inspector classified 200
products as defective or non defective. The number of errors is shown as follows:

Novice Experienced
25 35 26 40 46 20 31 15 25 19 28 17
45 31 33 29 21 49 19 18 24 10 20 21

(a) Test the difference between using novice and experienced inspectors.
Use α = 0.01 and assume unequal variances.
(10 marks)

(b) Test the difference between using novice and experienced inspectors.
Use α = 0.05 and assume equal variances.
(10 marks)
Question 3

A marmalade manufacturer produces thousands of jars of marmalade each

week. The mass of marmalade on a jar is an observation from a normal
distribution having mean 455 g and standard deviation 0.8 g.
A slight adjustment has been made to the filling machine during maintenance. A
random sample of 10 jars is found to contain the following masses (in g) of
marmalade:
454.8 453.8 455.0 454.4 455.4
454.4 454.4 455.0 455.0 453.6

3
CLD 21002 JANUARY 2020

(a) Assuming that the variance of the distribution is unaltered by the

adjustment, test at 5% significance level, the hypothesis that there has
been no change in the mean of the distribution.
(10 marks)

(b) Assuming that the variance of the distribution may have altered by the
adjustment, test, at 5% significance level, the hypothesis that there has
been no change in the mean of the distribution.
