1. Introduction

The process of selecting suitable ingredients of concrete and determining their relative quantities with
the aim of producing the required concrete, strength, durability and workability as economically as
possible is termed as the concrete mix design.

The compressive strength of hardened concrete, which is commonly known to be an measure of its other
properties, relies on several aspects, e.g. quality and quantity of cement, water and aggregates; batching
and mixing; location and compaction. The cost of concrete is based on the cost of materials, plant and
labor. Variations in the cost of materials arise from the fact that cement is several times more expensive
than the aggregate, which is why the aim is to produce as lean a mixture as possible.

The total cost of concrete relates to the expense of the materials needed for the production of the
minimum mean strength called the characteristic strength defined by the designer of the construction. It
varies on the quality control measures, but there is little question that quality control contributes to the
tangible costs.

As well as concrete placement is an important process in the construction that determine the success of
the structure and its life. Technical and environmental conditions are taken into strict consideration while
placing the concrete

This document illustrate calculations for grade 25 to 35 concrete mix design for a raft foundation. As
sub categories, precise calculation were done to obtain the quantities of cement, coarse and fine
aggregates and water needed for the construction. Further, cost of these materials are calculated. Apart
from that time consumption for truck mixer cycle and placing the concrete were calculated. Furthermore,
a concise method statement for executing the entire operation are being illustrated through the document.

13. Conclusion

This report indicates a concrete mix design for grade 25 to 35 in order to construct a concrete raft
foundation. Precise calculation has been done by the given parameters. Also some of the assumption are
made for the calculation as 5% of air voids in 1m3, 35% fine aggregates in mass, 65% coarse aggregates
mass. Further, it is assumed that truck mixer drive back on the same route and 10minits of changing time
was allocated. Though 13 trucks are required for the construction, it was recommended to keep one more
additional truck for an emergency situation.

Further in this report concise method statement for concrete mix design was illustrated. The document
has been created logically, clearly and well presented.

Throughout this assignment we were able to get a brief knowledge about preparing a mix design and as
well as the procedure of the placing concrete.
